Arrived—Ship Star of Germany, from London, after a fair weather passage of ninety-three days. An apprentice named John Carey, was washed overboard during the passage and drowned. The ship Ocean Mail is at the Heads, ninety-nine days from London, with 259 Government immigrants.
The City Council has resolved again to call for tenders for a street tramway. Grahamstown, Nov. 23.
A requisition is being signed, asking Sir George Grey to allow himself to be nominated for the Thames.

Court of Appeal. Brogden v. Miller.—This was a case to recover £IOOO insurance on the steamer Paterson in the London and Liverpool and Globe Company, which defendants declined to pay, on the ground that the policy did not apply to any ports on the West Coast. The Court held that, apart from the stamp laws, the Court would have power to rectify the terms of a policy which does not accord with the terms of the insurance slip. But to enable the Court to rectify a contract there must be some previous binding and valid contract between the parties. By the Stamp Act, 1869, the insurance slip, although it contains all the terms necessary for a policy, is rendered absolutely invalid as a contract, and not enforceable at law or inequity unless Btamped on a policy. The Court cannot rectify the contract (the policy) by that which, not being stamped, is by the Stamp Act no contract at all Judgment for defendant with costs. Plaintiffs asked for leave to appeal to the Privy Qcmacil,
H. B. Solomon, remanded on a charge of uttering a forged cheque for £9O, at Wanganui, has been unable to obtain bail. It is stated that the police have traced where the notes were given for the cheque at Wanganui, and afterwards changed. So'omon is still in gaol. Dunedin, November 23. A special train left this evening for Mosgiel, with guests for Mr Donald Reid's banquet. Messrs Macandrew, Stout, J. L. Gillies, Sir John Richardson, Messrs Murray, Thompson, and others will be present. A rumour is current on the best, authority that in the event of his Honor the Superintendent being elected as one of the D.unedia members for the Assembly, Mr John Joyr. , the well-known solicitor, will receive a numerously-signed requisition soliciting him to represent Port Chalmers. Invercargill. November 23. Requisitions are in circulation asking Mr J. Lumsden to stand for Invercarcill, and Mr Joyce, editor of the Southland News, for Wallace.
