THE INQUEST AT LYTTELTON.
Tbe following letter appears in this morn ing’s issue of both the Lyttelton Times and Press : Sib, —In reporting the inquest held yesterday on the body of the late Captain Geo Smith, the Press states that the jury returned a verdict of “ Felo de se whilst in a despondent state,” and the Lyttelton Times that a verdict of “ Temporary insanity” was returned. With the view of allaying doubts created by these conflicting reports, will you kindly permit me to state (through your next issue) that the verdict returned by the jury at that inquest was in words to this effect:—“ That the deceased committed suicide whilst in a state of despondency.” Neither the words 11 felo de se” or “temporary insanity,” were used by the foreman in delivering rhe verdict to the coroner, nor by the latter in recording the same. The absence of the reporters at the time the verdict was returned may account for the mistakes.
Yours, &c, E. A, Hargreaves, Foreman Lyttelton. 26th October, 1875.
