MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, October 14,

Drunk and Disorderly.— John Hayley, charged with drunkenness, was fined 20s, and Thos Pepperill, ss.
Drunk and Illegally on Premises, — Daniel Regan, arrested for being drunk and illegally on the premises of Mr Geo. Brown, Madras street, was fined ss. Disobeying an Order op the Court.—
Archibald Knowles, who had been arrested on the charge of disobeying an order of the Court, to contribute towards the support of his wife and family, was remanded for a week, to enable arrangements to be made for the accused to comply with the order.
Houses and Cattle at Large.— The following persons summoned for allowing horses and cattle to wander, were each lined 5s : Geo, Wilmer, John Garland, Richard Scarlett, Win. Tresseder, and Win. Maddiugton (two informations) ; Robert Brown, charged with allowing an entire horse to wander, was lined 40s. Unregistered Dogs.— Simon McCraewas fined 40s for having two unregistered dogs in his following.
Carrying Excess of Passengers.— Fredei’ick Palmer, charged with carrying three passengers in his hansom cab, was lined 10s. Obstructing the Tiirougiifare.— James Goss, summoned for removing a house without the prescribed hours, was lined 10s. Albert Foster, for obstructing Madras street with a quantity of timber and stone, was lined 10s. Harry Jordan, charged with obstructing the footpath with his cab, was lined in a similar amount. Absent from Horse and Vehicle.— Edward Turton, charged with this offence, was lined 10s.
Furious Driving —R. H. Campbell was charged with driving furiously in High street, in the direction of the Christchurch railway station, on the 27th of last month. The defendant admitted the offence, and said he was driving fast to catch the train with his English letters. Fined 10s. Tethering Horses.— For tethering horses in a thoroughfare, Henry Garland and G, S. Simpson were each fined 10s. Discharging Fireworks. —Henry Ohillingworth, a young lad, charged with discharging fireworks near the hospital, was fined 10s. Breach of Public-house Ordinance.— Henry Lewis was summoned for keeping his licensed house, the Devonshire Arms, open and selling drink during prohibited hours. Defendant admitted the offence, and said the persons served with drink had called in to his place to see a lodger, who had met with an accident. Fined £5. A second charge of obstructing the police, by refusing to allow Sergeant Wilson admission to his licensed house, on Sunday, 3rd October, was preferred against the same defendant. The defendant said he did not know it was the sergeant who was knocking. He had given instructions to his servants that morning not to admit any one. Fined 40s. Breach of Stamp Act. —Henry Blake, summoned for neglecting to stamp a receipt given to Wm. Blythe, as required by the Act, was fined 20s.
Obstructing- a Railway Officer.— Geo. Craw was summoned under the Railway Offences Act, for obstructing the station master at Styx station, and also with having struck that officer. Mr Wynn Williams, who appeared for the defendant, admitted the offence, and said his client, who was under the influence of liquor at the time, was exceedingly sorry for what had occurred. Fined £3. Behaving in A Disorderly Manner.— John Hopper was charged with behaving in the Britannia Hotel, Addington, in a disorderly manner, on the 3rd October, and also with being drunk and disorderly. Mr Thomas appeared for the landlord, Mr Fealters. The evidence given showed that on the morning of that date defendant was found behind the bar by the landlord’s daughter, and on being spoken to by her, and asked to put down a decanter he had in his hand, used improper language and slapped her. Defendant had also misbehaved himself again in the evening. Fined £4 and costs.
Wife Desertion. —Joseph Lloyd, sum moned for this offence, was, on the application of Mr Thomas, ordered to pay 12s per week towards the support of his wife.
