The brig Emperor, Captain Cleary, cleared the Customs yesterday afternoon, for Newcastle, N.S.W., in ballast. She will take her departure Immediately. _ . The fore-and-aft schooner Reward, Capt Westlake, arrived at Napier on Monday, after a fortysix hours* run from this port. TheU.S.S. Co's s.s. Bruce sailed on her usual route South yesterday afternoon. Tbe topsail schooner Marmion is loading at the Kaipara for this port, with timber for Matheson's Agency. The schooner Jessie is loadiug produce for Wellington; She sails shortly. It is well known that there have been many complaints about the long time it takes to ballast vessels in Lyttelton. Messrs Cameron Brothers have built a jetty in Diamond Hirbor to enable their lighters to take in ballast more easily. It is now 140 feet long, and they contemplate carrying it out another 100 feet. This will render it accessible to vessels of considerable draught, and make it possible to ship 400 tons of ballast per diem. One other great advantage is that the bay is so sheltered that work can go on in almost any weather. There is an almost inexhaustible quantity of blue rock in the face of the cliff above the jetty. The barque Edith Eose, Captain Harding, left New York on July 30th, for Smyrna; on her return she was expected to be placed on the berth again for New Zealand. The new three-masted schooner Irank Guy ■ailed from Sydney on the 3rd August for Wanganui, with a cargo of timber. The same night, when about 150 miles to the eastward, she lost both topmast and jibboom in a squall, and put back to Sydney for repairs. We understand that Mr Menzies, late chief officer of the Dover Castle, and formerlv of the Countess of Kintore, has been appointed captain of the brigantine R> no. Captain Miller is to go South to take command of the three-masted schooner Estelle. The Ryno is to undergo a thorough overhaul before leaving on another trip for the ißlands. We wish Captain Menzies every success.—" Southern Cross." We understand that Captain Andrew Sloane, late of the Moneynick and Roderick Dhu, has been appointed to the command of the schooner Agnes. This vessel will proceed at once to the Chatham Islands, and load there with timber for this port -, returning again, she will take timber on board for a Southern port.—" Southern Crosß."
