f Per Press Agency.] THIS DAY’S TELEGRAMS. Wellington, September 20 The election of a member of the Board of Education for Wellington country district, took place on Saturday. The candidates were Toomath and Travers, and the result of the poll was that Toomath obtained 114 votes, and Travers 98, Toomath was declared duly elected. Invercargill, Sept 20. A shocking accident occurred on the Mataura line on Saturday evening by which Charles Gardiner of Waihopai flour mills lost his life. The deceased was under the influence of liquor, and had been sitting on a culvert in the centre of a track opposite the road, when a ballast engine coming into town about eleven o’clock struck him on the head. The body must have donbled up, as it was dragged about 250 yards on by having caught the break rod Death must have been instantaneous. The body was badly mutilated, both arms were shattered, the legs broken, and the head smashed. Deceased had resided in the district for years, and was widely known. There will be an inquest to day, Auckland, September 18. , The wife of Captain Church, of the schooner Tawera, has returned from Kaipara. No hopes are now entertained of any survivors from the wreck, and no bodies have been washed ashore. Wellington, September 18. The football match—Auckland v Wellington—began at 2.30 this afternoon, Wellington winning by 15 points. The score was— Wellington—B rouges, equal to 4 points j 3 tries, equal to 6 points ; 1 goal, equal to 6 points. Total, 16 points. Auckland —2 rouges, equal to 1 point. Campbell, of Wellington, kicked three times for try at goal, and only succeeded once. The Auckland team appeared to be completely overmatched both in weight and play. Wellington’s drop kicking was remarkably good. The Auckland team were entertained at dinner this evening. They leave early to-morrow morning for the South per the Hawea.
