ACCIDENT TO THE TAUPO.
f -'- ' v |_PBOM A CORRESPONDENT.] 7/4' port Chalmers, September 13 At eleven minutes past ten this morning, the Taupo, on the voyage from Lyttelton to Port Chalmers,, struck three times on the Fish Beef. She first struck under the engineroom, then further aft, and finally further aft still. There were very few passengers, but all behaved well. The captain gave orders to clear away all the boats, and headed the vessel’s head for shore, signalling at the same time. Messrs Brogden’s schooner Clio, proceeding northward, remained in company. The boats were all got ready, but on sounding the wells, it was found she was making no water, so she proceeded on her course to Port Chalmers. The cause of the accident is that the water is usually seen breaking on the Fish Reef, and when the captain saw the line of kelp it was too late to go outside the reef. He therefore ran forward, and ordered the helm to be put hard-a-port, meaning to go inside the reef if possible. The vessel was slow in answering her helm, and consequently she struck the inside edge of the reef as detailed.
