PRESENTATION TO CR CALVERT.
Last evening, after the adjournment of the City Council, a presentation, consisting of a handsome silver tea and coffee service, was presented to Cr Calvert, on his retirement from the Council. The articles had been subscribed for by Cr Calvert’s brother Councillors, the ex-Mayors, and the Mayor, and were from the establishment of Mr Sandstein. The urn bore the following inscription—“ Presented to Cr Calvert by the Mayor, ex-Mayors, and Crs, on his retirement from the City Council, Christchurch, 10th September, 1875.” The Mayor read a letter from Mr J. B. Jameson, expressing his regret at not being able to be present. He (the Mayor) had now a very pleasing duty to perform ; it was that of asking his old friend Cr Calvert to receive from the ex-Mayors, Councillors, and himself (the Mayor) a tea and coffee service as a small token of their esteem and great appreciation of the services he had rendered during nine years as a member of that Council. Cr Calvert had been most assiduous, painstaking, and conscientious in the discharge of his duties, and although he had never filled the Mayor’s chair,
yet having d''cb’n n d it (much to the regret of Uio Council) when it was offered to him, he (!he Mayor J thought that (Jr Calvert might fairly be regarded as an ex Mayor. Whilst wishing every happiness to r Calvert and his family, he (the Mayor) trusted that when Or Calvert looked upon the memorial of their esteem, he would remember the happy times which he had spent as a member of the City Council. [Cheers.] Mr W. Wilson bore testimony to the admirable manner in which Cr Calvert had discharged bis duty, and the kindness of heart he had invariably displayed. Cr Calvert’s merits had been recognised by his fellow citizens by returning him several times to the Council by large majorities; [Cheers ] Crs Hart, Bishop, Jones, Gapes, Schmidt, and Raphael, also bore testimony to Cr Calvert’s private worth, and the manner in which he had filled the post of city councillor.
The health of Or Calvert was then drank in champagne with musical honors, .and three times three, and one cheer more for Mrs Calvert and the family. Cr Calvert returned thanks for a gift, which was the more acceptable from its being wholly unexpected by him. It was fifteen years since he landed in the colony, and had by earnest perseverance overcome the difficulties with which he had had to contend. He could not but feel gratified at the great kindness and respect they had manifested towards himself and Mrs Calvert, for which he begged to return his very sincere thanks. [Cheers,] Other toasts succeeded, amongst which was “ The ex-Mayors and visitors,” and the party then broke up.
