MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, September 3. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., KM.) Drunk and Disorderly.—John Tondon was fined 10s, and Jane Glass, 20s. Larceny of a Swag.—Richard Dougherty, now undergoing a sentence in Atldington Gaol, was brought up in custody of Mr Reston, charged with stealing a swag from the Borough Hotel, containing clothes and books. John Kelly deposed to the swag and contents being his property. He-had left them at the Borough Hotel, and had seen the prisoner there that morning; valued it at £4. Mr Reston, gaoler at Addington, stated that the swag produced had been taken to the gaol with prisoner, who claimed it as his property. Inspector Feast gave evidence of the prisoner having received two years at the Supreme Court for larceny. He had also been leading a very bad life before being convicted, not only in Canterbury but elsewhere. Sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment, with hard labour, to take effect at the expiration of the sentence he is now undergoing. Using Abusive and Threatening Language.—lsaac Harris was charged on summons with having used abusive and threatening language towards Joseph Exall. Mr Thomas appeared for the defendant. From the evidence it appeared that defendant rents two rooms from complainant, and, after repeated annoyances, he (defendant) used some very improper and abusive expressions. This evidence was borne out by a witness. His Worship said that defendant's conduct had certainly been very provoking and uncalled for. He would be bound over in his own recognizance in the sum of £lO to keep the peace for six months.
