LYTTELTON LEGENDS, No. 11.
"WHA WADNA FECIIT FOR CHARLIE."
Nicodemus does not think the Lyttelton people would, at least, the Presbyterian portion ; it was a shame to keep them all waiting, and never turn up after all. BOROUGH COUNCIL. Nicodemus sees by an advertisement in the Star, that the populace are not to vote for the three M's ; that is, they are not to go in for the Mercantile Interest, the Shipping Interest, or for the interest |of Medicine. Nicodemus always thought these things [were what most needed representation in Lyttelton, but it appears he is mistaken. However, there is to be a public meeting, at which the various speakers will explain their views ; it is to be hoped, more clearly than the writer of that advertisement has. The lowly Holmes is recommended as a 'check upon the Works Committee getting any nearer Heaven than bhey are at present. Next Thursday the election will come off. and of course that is the real test of public estimation. Nicodemus hopes the best men will get in, but does not know which are the best. By-the-bye, he sees that the advertiser related and kindly inserted the mercantile interest in an afterthought. MORE CURIOUS ADVERTISEMENTS. Mr Alport, I am surprised at you; I always thought you were a respectable man, but really after your shocking act last Saturday, Nicodemus gives you up. The following advertisement appeared in the Lyttelton Times the other day:— " Saturday, August 28, at twelve o'clock. Mr H. E. Alport will sell by public auction, at his rooms, Hereford street, Christchurch, on above day, as follows: —Luke David Sharpe, deceased." To think we have come to this ; Nicodemus has heard of burking, but this appears to be burking and sharping too. INCORRECT SPELLING. So it was indeed, to quote " Instead of Dieu et mon |droit, it was Mad Deiu won droit." Wanted Known That our African brother does not now lodge at the Lyttelton Hotel.
Wanted—Tlireo good Borough Coun cillors.
Wanted—A good house at the Colonists' Hall to-night. Wanted—By the Lyttelton Dramatic Society—cash. Wanted to know that cool cucumbers are not at present obtainable. Wanted, by Nicodemus, a few more "vacant chairs," those not groggy preferred.
Wanted Known —If any other person but a Good Templar can Excelsior till he reaches a rainbow.
Wanted Badly—More fun for Nicodemus to write about.
