COMMERCIAL.
The past week has been very dull in the grain market, and beyond a few sales of oats no transactions of any importance .have come under our notice. Wheat is a trifle lirmer, hut no actual sales are reported; buyers, however, are now ollerinK -Is for really prime samples for export. Millers do not yet feel inclined 10 give this price, having large stocks of flour on hand, with little demand, and the Northern markets are still supplied with late Adelaide imports. Some considerable sales ot oat« have been made at 2s 6d, and farmers now appear to be more anxious to quit at this price than buyers are to purchase. A few samples of inferior barley have been offered, but there is no sale lor this quality, very large stocks being held by merchants. Flour remains without alteration. I otatoes are dull, and little export business doing Dairy produce remains at last week s prices; buyers' quotations are—Prime milling wheat. 3s lod to 4s ■ do oats, 2* 6d ; barley, 4s 3d ; flour, £9 10s in sacks £9 17s Gd in 100-lb bags, and £lo os m 00-lb bags; bran, £i 10s; sharps, £5 10s; potatoes, £3 10s to £3 17» 6d; butter. Is; cheese, hams and bacon, bare, ll*d. cloth, Is, f. 0.1, Business has been a little more brisk in the impoit markets during the past week. Additions have rfeen made to stocks, by the arrival of the Marmion, SWairgowrie fromlondon. on the 22nd instant both bringing full and valuable cargoes of general Teas-Several sales of the »ew I
season's teas have been made at prices ranging from Is 6d to 2s i.b. Last season's teas nave been selling freely in large parcels, at Is -Id to 2s i b. according to quality. Sugars bave met with Rood trade sale, large parcels have been quoted a: the following rates:—White crystals, £35 to £37; yellow, £3i; yellow counters, £3O to £3l i.b. Spirits—Several large sales have been eifected in rum (W. 1,), at 4s Id to 4s 3d for 10 0.p., i.b. Other lines in spirits are dull. Tobacco—We hear of a line of Raven's twist, in quarter-tierces, changing hands at price withheld. Ordinary trade sales have taken place in Venus twist, at Is 9d to Is 9£d. Barratt's, Shellard's, and Cable wist, sell at Is 6d to Is s-Jd i.b. A few parcels of bottled ales and stouts have been quitted at full rates ; we quote for best brands Us 6d to 12s 6d for quarts, and 7s 9d to 8s 3d for pints. A shipment of hops, ex White Rose, slightly damaged, has been taken up at price withheld, the market is now bare of English hops. Dried fruits—Sultana raisins sell in trade parcels at 8d; Eleme's 7A to 7*d. Ourrants, very scarce at 5d to ssd. Galvanised iron is quoted at £37 to £3B for parcels. English malt— We.ihear of a large shipment ex Oriana changing hands at lis, d.p, Sperm candles sell freely at 10-J-d to lljd. Kerosene—Trade sales are effected at 2s id to 2s 2d, d.p. We note the railway carriage on merchandise from Lyttelton and wharfage, have been raised from 5s Cd and Is, to 6s 6d and 2s 6d respectively. This will be a serious item on bulk goods, such as salt, whiting, &c. The rates upon all goods, grain, &c, have been increased in like proportion
