MAGISTRATES COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, August 26. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk and Creating a Disturbance.— Edward Quirk, charged with being drunk and creating a disturbance, was lined ss. Richard Naughton, for being drunk, was also lined in a similar amount. Horses and Cattle at Large. —For permitting horses and cattle to wander, James Mecham was fined ss; Robert Thompson, ss; Hugh Cassih, ss; Richard Evans (two cows), 5s ; Matthew Thomas, ss, Fighting in Court. —Two men commenced fighting in the Court, and his Worship sentenced one of them named J. Barrett, who appeared to have been the agressor, to ninety-six hours’ imprisonment for contempt of Court, at the same time directing an information to be laid against him for the assault. Absent from Horse and Vehicle.— Selwyn Davies, summoned for two offences of this nature, was fined £l, and Francis Wood for a like offence 10s, George Paterson was charged with being absent from his horse and van. The ease was dismissed. Thomas Stout, J. H. Evans, Alfred Brown, and Frederick Palmer, charged with being absent from their cabs were each fined 10s. Unnecessary Obstruction.— For obstructing the street with his horse, John Belgian was fined 10s, and Daniel Mautre, who had obstructed the foothpath with his dray was also fined 10s. Furious Driving. —For driving furiously, Win, Paterson, Henry Sykes, and John Butters were each fined 10s. No Lights on Cab. —A case against Joseph Cook was dismissed. Carrying three Passengers. —Mateora Goodger charged with this offence was fined 10s. Unregistered Dogs. —James Jenkins was fined 20s; Peter Hill, case dismissed; John Wills, fined 20s; Charles Jeffs, 20s; J. J. Clarkson, 20s; John Shear, 20s ; R. Harper, 20s Committing a Nuisance in Railway.— William Small, who did not appear, was fined 20s, Burning Gorse, —Samuel Scott and .Hugh McCaw were fined 10s eech. Breach of Public-house Ordinance.— Philip Martin of the Black Horse Hotel was fined £5; J. W. Oram, of the City Hotel, was fined £5; John Fox, who had omitted to keep his lamp burning was fined 10s, and W, K. Smith iu a similar amount. ’
Assaults. —Ralph Flindall was charged with assaulting Wm. Kent on the morning and evening of the 17th inst. These parties reside in the same house, and some misunderstanding took place about complainant being in the kitchen. As he would not leave when requested to do so, the defendant pushed him out of it. Fined 10s and costs. Ellen Lilly was summoned for assaulting Sarah Doig on the 18th August. These parties are neighbours who have had an old grievance between them for some time. From the evidence it appeared the defendant threw a bucket of water over complainant, and threw mud at her, and pushed her. Fined 20s, and costs of witnesses 20s. As the parties were leaving the Court, the defendant struck the complainant. His Worship ordered her to be locked up until another information could be laid. John Luke was charged with having assaulted Thomas Williams. Mr O’Neill appeared for the complainant, and Mr Wynn Williams for the defendant. The parties are neighbours, and defendant’s fowls got into complainant’s garden. He turned them out, and after some words defendant knocked him down and struck him on the head, besides pulling some hair out. Complainant handed in a medical, certificate showing the extent of the injuries received by him. On the application of Mr Wynn Williams, his Worship allowed the case to stand adjourned for a week, as defendant desired to take out a cross-summons. Defendant to pay all the costs of adjournment. F. McSherry against J. Barrett. This case was adjourned until Thursday next. G. E. Freestone was summoned for assaulting W. Smith on the 20th August. Mr Slater appeared for the defendant. The complainant stated that at an entertainment in the Papanui schoolroom, defendant waltzed round the room, and when he (complainant) spoke to him he struck him ; held his whip over him in a threatening manner, and said he would knock his head off. This evidence was not borne out by the evidence of a boy called by complainant, and the assault was denied by a witness for the defendant. Case dismissed. Contempt of Court. —Sarah Doig, a defendant in a case of assault heard during the morning, and who had struck the complainant when leaving the Court, was brought up and sentenced to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.
