Soap. —Many persons who have cometothis province of late, may not know that the soap branded with a star, is of a very superior description, to most other sorts in use here. Very severe tests have proved that it is manufactured on the strictest chemical principles so as to produce an article, which whilst it possesses thorough cleansing properties, does not injure the finest fabrics, or affect the hands in the slightest degree. The public generally, will find it to their advantage to use this soap, as in addition to the above mentioned qualifications, it is sold at a lower price than most other kinds. A single tria will prove the foregoing facts to the satisfaction of all.— Advt. Inquest. —An inquest was held at the Hospila l yesterday before J. W. S, Coward, Esq.,"‘Coroner, on the body of a male infant —one of twins—whose mother, Harriet Dawson, it was alleged had neglected it since its birth, thus causing its death. Mr Inspector Buckley was in attendance to watch the ease for the police. Mr M. Sandstein was chosen foreman of the jury. After several witnesses had been examined, and lengthy evidence taken, the jury after much deliberation returned a verdict —“That the deceased child, Thomas Dawson, died from general debility through the visitation of God.” The following rider was attached to the verdict—- “ The jurors attach great blame to the mother for her -negligence of her child.” The coroner called Mrs Dawson in, and told her that the jury had taken a very merciful view of the circumstances attending the death of her child. The jury considered she had been very negligent, but had they considered her negligence the immediate cause of the child’s death, it would have been his duty to have committed her to prison.
