Shooting out of Season. —We regret to learn that shooting is still being carried on co some extent by persons in the neighborhood ot Luke Ellesmere, and we hope that should the grangers or police—who we believe are cognisant of the fact, aud are making every effort to suppress such illegal aud unsportsmanlike proceedings—drop upon the culprits, iu the interests of sport that an example will be made which may deter others from similar practices. >SO:U\ —Many persons who have come to this province of late, may not know that the soap branded with a star, is of a. very superior description, to most other sorts in use here. Very severe tests have proved that it is manufactured on the strictest chemical principles so as to produce an article, which whilst it possesses thorough cleansing properties, does not injure the finest fabrics, or affect the hands in the slightest degree. The public generally, wdl find it to their advantage to use this soap, as in addition to the above mentioned qualifications, it is sold at a lower price than most other kinds. A single tria will prove the foregoing facts to the satisfaction of all.—Advt. Mr and Mrs Hoskins.—The playgoers of Cbristchurch will read with pleasure an announcement which appears elsewhere, relative to the opening of the Theatre Royal on the 28th instant, for the season, under the management of our old fri'nds, Mr and Mrs Hoskins. They bring with them a very strong company, including besides themselves, Mr and Mrs Darrell, Mr aud Mrs Douglas, Miss Flora Anstead, Mr J. P; flydes, and other old favorites in Christchurch. We feel sure that one and all will receive a cordial and hearty welcome, and the only regret is that we have not a better edifice in which to witness their talented impersonations. Inquest,—An inquest was held yesterday afternoon, at 4 o'clock, at the hospital, before Dr Coward, coroner, on view of the body of Archibald McDonald, aged 60 years, whose body was found in the Waimakariri, near Carter's, on Thursday afternoon. The evidence disclosed that the deceased, who had been a very hei'.vy drinker, stopped suddenly in April last, and had been in a desponding state since. He left home on Suuday last, and was not seen again until his body was found iu the river, lying face downwards, with only sufficient water to cover bis face; his hat was on the bank beside him, with a stone placed on it, as if he had gone to drink aud been unable to raise his face from the water, and thus been suffocated. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of "Found Drowned."
