MAGISTRATES COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, August 16th. (Before C. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly. —Jos. Wilber, charged with drunkenness, and who seemed to be of unsound mind, was remanded for medical enquiry. Larceny and Vagrancy. —John Keeling was charged on remand with the larceny of a blanket at Rangiora, and also with having no lawful visible means of support. Inspector Feast deposed to seeing the prisoner stop a woman at the corner of the Square and Worcester street on Friday. The woman was evidently wishing to come to the Court, and after trying to stop and using frightful language, he spat in her face, and threw her into the gutter. He (witness) had known the accused for eleven years, and during that time he had been loafing more or less about the country, and had been several times convicted. Margaret Clark deposed to the prisoner having kicked her in the side while she was walking near the Square on Friday last. He also struck her in the face, and threw her into a gutter. The blanket produced had been left by the accused for her at a Mrs Graves’s. Mrs Graves called, stated that the prisoner left two blankets at her house for the last witness—a blue and a red one. The blanket produced was one of those he left. J. Baker identified the blanket produced as his property. He left it in his tent on Saturday week, near the Rangiora station. Valued the blanket at 15s, The prisoner had no right to take it. His Worship said he would deal with the prisoner as a vagrant. Sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
