Both as an actor and a private citizen, Mr Hill has won golden opinions amongst us, and we trust to see the theatre filled on the evening selected. Several of our best amateurs are expected to take part in the performance. Soap, —Many per sons who have cometothis province of late, may not know that the soap branded with a star, is of a very superior description, to most other sorts in use here. Very severe tests have proved that it is manufactured on the strictest chemical principles so as to produce an article, which whilst it possesses thorough cleansing properties, does not injure the finest fabrics, or affect the hands in the slightest degree. The public generally, will find it to their advantage to use this soap, as in addition to the above mentioned qualifications, it is sold at a lower price than most other kinds. A single tria will prove the foregoing facts to the satisfaction of all.— Advt, Fire. —Shortly before eight o’clock last evening the Lichfield street fire bell i.angout a somewhat indistinct peal, followed by the Market Place one after an interval of a few minutes. For a little time it was a matter of conjecture as to where the fire was, as no glare, probably owing to the bright moonlight, was visible. Eventually it was discovered that a small two-roomed cottage, situate in a garden abutting on Kiimore street west, just beyond the Normal Schools, and in close contiguity to the residences of Messrs Maude and W. Montgomery, was on fire. The cottage was a mere shell, and so speedily did the fire take holdof it. that though the neighbours and brigade were quickly on the spot, it was found to be utterly impossible from the body of flame to save any of the furniture. The fire brigade, with the two steamers, the Dreadnought, and the hook and ladder apparatus, mustered with commendable promptitude, as also did a large number of the fire police under Captain Mitchell, and the regular police under Mr Inspector Buckley, but the wind fortunately being very light and the building standing
comparatively’isolated, Mi .Superintendent Harris did not put the engine on until the lir e had burnt down considerably, when the embers were quickly extinguished. A small fnurrooraed house, between the one destroyed and Mr Montgomery’s fence, was atone time thought to be in danger from the sparks but a few buckets of water soon removed this fear. The house was the property of Mr Roberta, hairdresser, Market square, who held the lease from Mr Bowman, and neither the building nor furniture were insured. A small sum of money was in the house at the time, and Mr Roberts estimates his loss at il 100. JSIo one was in the house at the time of the fiie, Mr and Mrs Roberts with their infant child being at chapel, and there is no information as to how the fire originated. When first seen by one of the neighbors it was bursting through the roof.
