August 13—Linnet, ketch, 20 tons, Smith, for Pigeon Bay. The s.s Beautiful Star arrived from Dunedin, and Timaru, at 11.15 a.m. to-day. She sails, on her return trip, to-morrow. Cunningham, Daily, Wood, Baker, Jenkins. The schooner Melville sailed for Auckland at 7.30 yesterday morning. The schooners Spray and Alert are shortly expected from Hokitika with cargoes of timber. A large barque was seen off Dunedin Heads on • Sunday afternoon, and passed to the northward. The schooner Free Trader sailed from Newcastle for this port on July 29th with a cargo of 439 tons coal. The Union Steamship Company’s s.s, Haweais appointed to sail from Lyttelton for Port Chalmers direct on Wednesday, 18tli Instant. The N.Z.S.S. Co’s s.s. Wellington will leave Lyttelton for Northern ports on Tuesday next, 17th inst, at 3 p.m. The ship Oriana is discharging with great dispatch- On Monday she lauded 210 tons, on Tuesday 170, and Wednesday 180. The Oriana commences taking in ballast on Saturday. The Countess'of Kintore has discharged 40 tons of stone ballast, and took in some tallow yesterday afternoon. The goods discharged from the White Kose are turning out in first-rate order. The actual seat of the fire has not yet been reached, but the space in which it occurred appears to be very limited so far as it is possible to judge. The s.s. Mullough steamed down to the Heads yesterday morning with telegraph poles and material to connect the look-out with the new pilot station. A new flagstaff was erected last week, and the whole station is in excellent order. The N.Z.S.S. Go’s s.s. Taranaki arrived in harbour yesterday at 7.45 am. Left Port Chalmers at 2 pm. on tlie 11th, thus doing the passage in 17 hours 45 minutes. Experienced thick squally weather and S.W. breeze the whole way up. She was berthed at No 2 Wharf, and after discharging took on board 50 tons cargo for North, and sailed at 3.15 p.m. We have to thank Mr Edmistou, the purser, for tiles and report. The Hobart Town brig Clematis, Captain Garth, has again arrived from Hobart Town, after a lengthy and boisterous passage of 22 days, with a cargo of timber, fruit, and sundries. Captain Garth reports leaving Hobart Town on July 21st. Fresh westerly winds were experienced up to the 28th, after which was becalmed lor four days ; thence strong easterly winds and dirty weather, tacking into S.S.W. until passing the Snares on 2nd August; made Cape Saunders on the 4th inst; from thence light airs (from the westward) and calms till arriving off Oamaru on Saturday; thence strong northerly wind up t > the 11th; from that date to arrival moderate S.W. winds. The Clematis T will be berthed to discharge to-day, weather permitting. The steam collier Easby is notified to leave Lyttelton for Wellington, Newcastle, and Sydney on the 18th. Particulars can bo had from the agents, Messrs Dalgety, Nichols, and Co. We observe, by advertisement elsewhere, the clipper barque Cabar Feidh will sail for Auckland on or about the 20th. The barquentine Prince Alfred, Captain Bennett, was towed below the breakwater by the s.s. Gazelle yesterday morning. The wind being fair, she kept under weigh, and was soon outside the Heads, standing to the northward. Her destination is Picton, where she will load timber for this port. The barque Especulador cleared the Customs yesterday for Newcastle, and sailed at 5.40 p.m. This vessel since her arrival in port has received a new bowsprit, jibboom, and head gear, and is in tirst-class order.
The following is a copy of the cargo of the barque John Knox, as inserted in the “ Sydney Morning Herald” of July 31st: —56 logs. 600 felloes, 65 naves, 205 cases fruit, 398 pieces timber, 50 bags sugar, 40 casks treacle, 2 horses, 2 buggies, and 20 casks sundries.
The Hawea arrived at Auckland yesterday morning from the South. The Belle Brandon sailed yesterday for Baratonga.
