A public meeting is also called for Monday next at South Kakaia to consider the Abolition Bill as brought in by tbe General Government. Soap.—Many persons who have cometo this province of late, may not know that the soap branded with a star, is of a very superior description, to most other sorts in use here. Very severe tests have proved that it is manufactured on the strictest chemical principles so as to produce an article, which whilst it possesses thorough cleansing properties, does not injure the finest fabrics, or affect the hands in the slightest degree. The public generally, will find it to their advantage to use this soap, as in addition to the above mentioned qualifications, it is sold at a lower price than most other kinds. A single tria will prove the foregoing facts to the satisfaction of all.—Advt. We would also draw attention to the inducements held out to the public in the Art Union, the tickets for which entitle the holder to admission to the show, in addition to a chance of carrying off one of some hundred excellent prizes consisting of well-bred poultry, pigeons, canaries, &c. Lyttelton Dramatic Society. These amateurs gave their first performance consisting of " Bombastes Furioso," " No 1 Bound the Corner," and "The Turkish Bath," on Thursday evening last. The attendance was very large, and judging from the frequent applause the audience was very well satisfied. Mr Bolt, who performed the arduous duties of star'e manager, and Mr Ford, who acted as musical director, are both worthy of great praise. The Matter gentleman composed the greater part of the music used in "Bombastes" which was very effective, one air being particularly pretty. It was allotted to Mr Jacobson, but he sang it very iud.ffereutly, as he was very hoarse. The dresses and scenery were fair, and altogether the performance was a very great success. Mr Ford's acting in the Turkish Bath was excellent, and would not have disgraced any theatre. Kind friends assisted with properties, &c, Mrs Bouse embroidering a beautiful silk banner for Bombastes, and Messrs D'Authreau, Skinner, Geo Ayers, George Agar,,Miss Agar, and Others, rendered assistance. Mr White painted aud do eorated the scenes, it is proposed to repeat the performance to-night.
