Sydney, July 16. The resolution in the Assembly for the adoption of the Pacific mail contract is postponed for a week. New Zealand advices, with reference to the bank arrangement, has improved the position of bank shares here. A detailed statement has been received from Tindall, which leaves no room for doubt that the remains found on the Liverpool ranges are those of the missing horse Duke of Athol. Richard Sims, of Sydney, miller, has filed his schedule ; liabilities, £37,000 ; assets, £24,000. The City Bank has declared a dividend of 8 per cent. Melbourne. Dr Robertson, of the Kew Asylum, has promised to substantiate his statement of undue influence by members of parliament in receiving appointments for persons in the public service. Thomas Cavanagh has been committed to trial for forging the name of Alfred George Warren, to consent to the marriage of his young wife. He was removed from the Court in a fainting condition. Numerous petitions against the Education Act Amendment Bill were signed at the Roman Catholic Churches on Sunday. During the voyage of the Cardigan Castle the main royal mast was struck by lightning. Mary Ann Pope, an elderly woman, was burned to death in her bed at Richmond. The Government declines to make sectarian differences in the classification of children in the industrial school. It is understood that the Government intends dealing further with the case of Judge Dunne. Luke's estate has been assigned to a brewing firm; They return their liabilities at £9OOO. The steamer Ceylon has gone off uninsured.
Queensland sugars have sold at from 10s to 20s advance. There has been large sales of oilmen's stores. 3500 cases of kerosene has been sold privately at a decline. Wheat is firm at 5s sd. The same price was refused for South Australian at auction. Foo Chow advices state that two steamers are loading tea for Australia. There will be no further departures. The tea market is quiet; Brisbane. Robert Sparrow, bonded warehouseman, has been arrested on a warrant charged with feloniously uttering a locker's order, and defrauding the Customs. A meeting of Roman Catholics has resolved to celebrate the centenary of O'Connell. Adelaide. Wheat, 4s 2d.
INTEKPROVINCIAL. Wellington, July 23. A respectable young man, a recent arrival, named Ed. Wm. Church, shot himself through the head this morning outside the Catholic Cemetpry. There is little hope of his lecovery. The engineer of the steamer Fairy was found dead yesterday leaning against a rail. Mr P. A. Buckley has been appointed Provincial Solicitor. The Union Company's Taupo arrived at eleven last aight. She left Nelson at 11 a.m., and made the run to Picton in six and a half hours. She has fifty saloon passengers. Invercargill, July 23 A slight shock of earthquake, which lasted about a minute, was felt here this morning. Mr Robert Cameron, of Winton, is announced to oppose Mr M'Neill and Mr Bastain for the representation of Wallace. [FROM OUR AUCKLAND CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, July 23. A fearful accident has occurred at Gibbons' sawmills, Manukau Heads. John Burns, employed on the tramway getting cogs down, fell down with his arm across the rail; the car with a log weighing four tons passed over the limb, fearfully mutilating the bone, and leaving the arm hanging by the skin. It was amputated. W. Walter Williamson, the original discoverer of the Thames gold fields, has narrowly escaped death in some rough country near Tairua. He was benighted, and the cold nearly killed him. He was found next morning very feeble, and unable to speak, but is now recovering.
