The grain market is without movement, no transactions having transpired of any consequence for some time past. Wheat is quite nominal at 3s 6d, as none is offering. Flour remains steady at £0 10s Oats are quieter at 2s 9d as orders are now being sent South, which relieves this market. Hams and bacon meet an excellent demand at for bare, and lid in cloth. Butter is meeting a lessened demand and is oil'cring freely at Is 3d. Cheese is firm at 9d. Transactions in the import markets during the past week have been very limited, most of the business done has been in small parcels. Stocks in some lines are getting low, and will be barely sullicient to carry us on until arrival of ships now overdue from London. Importers will be put to a serious inconvenience by the detention of the White Rose at Mauritius, as most of her goods were needed, and a considerable quantity sold to arrive; according to telegraphic advices we cannot look for her arrival here until end of July. The Invererne cleared for London on the 12th instant, taking a valuable cargo, consisting of wool, tallow, wheat and sundries. Messrs H. With the exception of a few lines, great difficulty was experienced by salesmen in disposing of the different lots. Several lines were passed in at auction, but sold afterwards at graziers' values. The sheep to hand had evidently been removed from their pastures prematurely, aud were consequently sold at prices leaving a large margin for profit to the purchasers. Melbourne.—The '* A.rgus " of the loth reports :—ln the import markets business continues depressed, and the utmost heaviness prevails. A feeling ol very considerable uneasiness exists in commercial circles in consequence of the failures occurring in Sydney, as, owing to the very close business relations now maintained between the two colonies, it is scarcely possible for some of the Melbourne firms to escape without loss, though, in the pi-esent unsatisfactory state of affairs, it is impossible to know how or where the loss is to arise. Humour has been very busy all day with the names of many Sydney firms, and it will be noticed from our Sydney telegram that Messrs Beilby and Scott have stopped payment. Transactions in the market have been of very little account indeed j and even for ordinary requirements little or no demand has been experienced. BreadstufTs are moving very slowly. Flour is quoted at £lO 15s for best brands ; moderate s-ales are making at the price, and we hear of none being ofTered under, though for ordinary brands £lO 12s Gd would be taken. At auction this forenoon, £lO 10s only was offered for the latter qualities; but the bid was not accepted. "Wheatagain presents a slightly easier aspect; buyers generally do not offer more than 4s lid for best Northern, while holders require ss. Under the hammer a small lot of 85 bags was quitted at 4s lid. The same price offered for several other parcels, however, was refused, and the whole was withdrawn for ss. Oats are going off steadily, and, owing to the scarcity of maize, very fair prices continue to be realised; 815 bags were cleared off publicly, and prices ranging from 3s 3d to 3s 6d and 3s Id to 3s B£-d were obtained. Maize is selling quietly at 5s 2d to 5s 3d. Bran is rising in value, and Bales have been made at Is 5Jd. We can hear of no sales of sugars, though the principal holders of Mauritius report a brisk inquiry, more especially for brewing sorts, for which however, they refuse to give a quotation, until the result of to-morrow's sale of Yarraville becomes known. Teas are without any special inquiry: trade sales of fine medium congous are making at Is 9d to is lOd. In kerosene little has transpired. We note, however, a firm market, Brilliant and Diamond being very firmly held at Is 4d and is 3d respectively. In liquids there is nothing to refer to of the slightest importance Only a trade inquiry is experienced for braudies, aud 8s 4-jd is realised for Heunessy's.
