CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, May 31. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Affiliation. —A case against James Hazlehurst, for failing to support his illegitimate child, was adjourned for a week, as it was stated that defendant was about to marry the mother. Drunkenness. —Thomas Langdown, fined ss; James Mutton, fined ss. Larceny. Frederick Luscomb was brought up on remand charged with stealing three blankets and other articles, the property of Henry Fletcher and others. Detective that he arrested the prisoner at Malvern on Saturday, and found in his possession three blankets, a pair of trousers, a brown coat, and a belt. Witness charged prisoner with having stolen the articles, and he admitted having done so. Henry Fletcher identified the blankets pro duced as his property; they were taken from a room in Johnson’s house, Oolombostreet, - on Friday night last. James Hill deposed that prisoner had been staying with him occasionally. He left last week. Since prisoner had • left witness missed the belt produced which was his property. The coat produced belonged to a man named Clark, who lodged with witness. A witness named Johnson identified the trousers produced as his property. James Clark identified the coat produced as his property. The prisoner made no defence. Chief-Detective Feast said that the prisoner came out from London about two months since in the Ashburton. He had been staying ins Port and had robbed the parties with whom he had been staying, and for this a warrant had been issued. The prisoner had also been staying with Mr Hill, who had given him a shake-down. His Worship said as this was the first time prisoner had been brought up, he should not pass so heavy a sentence as he deserved, for he appeared not to be able to keep his hands from other persons’ property. The sentence of the Court was that prisoner be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for one month.
