THE VOLUNTEERS.

Artillery Practice. Two detachments of the Christchurch Artillery left Christchurch by the 10,30 a.m. train yesterday. They were met at Lyttelton by the life and drum band, who played them to the practice ground at Battery Point, and also on their return. The detachment was under the command of Captain Craig and Lieutenant Stansell, and some good shot and shell practice tock place with their howitzer. Money prizes of the value of £2, 255, and 15s were competed for. We append the scores:— Ist Detachment: Sergeant-Major .Roberts, 2ft left Gunner Hill, Byds left and 20 over Gunner Cooper, Byds right and 15 over Bombardier Burnett, 8 yds left Corporal Winney, 15yds right and 15 over Bombardier Gapes, Byds right and 20 over Gunner Strange, 20yds short Gunner Andrews, 18yds short and 2 hft Gunner Hughes, 30yds over. No. 2 Detachment: Quartermaster- Sergeant Raven, 7yds left

The prizes therefore fell to Sergeant-Mnjor Roberts Ist, Gunner Ormandy 2nd, and Sergeant-Major Kerr 3rd. Sergeaut-Major Roberts as first prize taker also wins the medal presented by Quartermaster-Sergeant Raven. It ought to be mentioned that at twelve o'clock the firing for the prizes was suspended, and the usual Royal salute was fired in honour of her Majesty's birthday. A rather amusing incident occurred in connection with the shooting. On the gun being placed in position it was discovered that a boat was moored alongside the target rock, and that some adventurous fisherman was pursuing his quiet but interesting occupation. To warn him of his danger first one and then a second round of blank cartridge was fired without effect. Captain Craig then ordered a solid shot to be sent somewhat near him. The haste he then displayed in " skedaddling" evoked roars of laughter from the numerous spectators assembled at Battery Point.
