THIS DAY'S TELEGRAMS.

Greymouth, May 22. Sailed: The Maori, for Dimedin, via Northern ports, at 11 a.m.

[from our dunedin correspondent.] Dunedix, May 21. The Star says that the Government will meet Parliament on a fixed date, viz., July 20th, adding, that should the Opposition take advantage of the weakness of the Ministry, and go in for the massacre of the innocents, provincialism will gain nothing and would stand to lose a good deal. So illadvised a course would only pi'ecipitate the general elections. Mr Hich, of Palmerston, purposes giving a cup, valued at £SO, as a coursing prize. The Palmerston district will, no doubt, be well adapted for coursing. Several lovers of coursing here have taken a great interest in searching for greyhounds of the purest pedigree, with a view of competing at the forthcoming meet. The following appears in this morning's Guardian: — '• It will be remembered that some time ago a letter appeared in a Manchester paper which bore the names of a number of new arrivals in this province. These people did not at first settle down very comfortably, and having to rough it, wrote home, giving a wretched and biassed account of the place. We now learn that several of these very men regret ever having put their names to such a document, and for the most part are at the present time doing remarkably well." The cricket meeting last night was not largely attended, because it was understood that oidy formal business would be done. The proposition of Mr Burton—" That in the interests of cricket it is desirable that an intercolonial match between New Zealand and Australia be arranged," was cordially agreed to by the meeting, but an opinion was expressed that substantial support by the public would be materially influenced by the knowledge as to whether the proposed match was a friendly one or merely for speculative purposes. It was incidentally mentioned that £l3O was promised towards the expenses of the match. Pegasus's tips for the Birthday races are, Maiden, the Ada gelding ; Hurdle, Medora, with Tommy Dodd 2 ; Birthday Handicap, King Phillip Ist, Eight Bower 2nd; Tradesmens' Handicap, King Phillip ; Lyndon 2. May 22.
