MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, May 22. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness.—William Stanlick, fined ss; Daniel Stacey, fined ss; William Aubrey, who was also charged with using obscene language, was fined 10s; Walter Black, fined 10s; George Brown, who was also charged with indecency, was, as it appeared he was leading a vagrant life, sent to gaol for one month with hard labor. Illegally on Premises. Benjamin Saunders was charged with being illegally on the premises of the railway department. It appeared that shortly before eleven o'clock last night, the defendant was found sleeping in the Parcels Shed, at the Christchurch Railway Station. Mr Hesketh said that he knew nothing of the defendant, but of late many articles had been missing from the railway, such as bags of sugar. Defendant said he was subject to fits, and he had gone into the shed to lie down. His Worship fined defendant 10s.

Thursday, May 28. [Before W. Donald, Esq,, R.M.] Drunkenness —James McHenry, arrested by Constable Beck, charged with this offence, was dismissed with a caution.

Larceny.—Walter Pinch, a seaman belonging to the ship Cicero, was brought up, charged with this offence, and remanded until Saturday.

Assault.—James Kerr was charged by Isabella Williams with this offence. Mr Nalder appeared for the defendant. The evidence of several witnesses was taken, and after Mr Nalder had addressed the Bench, a flue of 10b and, costs was inflicted,,

OXFORD. Wednesday, May 29. (Before A. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M., and J. R.Gorton, Esq., J. P.) Drunk and Resisting the Police.— Thomas alias Harry Bloomfield, was charged as above, being arrested oq the 17th inst by Constable Cunningham. Fined 10s for drunkenness, and 20s for resisting; also ordered to pay 10s for damage done to uniform clothing, the Resident Magistrate remarking that the police, who were necessarily few in number in outlying districts, should be protected. Breach op Police Ordinance.—Chas Webster was charged with making use of obscene language in a public place, viz, the bar of the Halfway House, Moeraki Downs. Fined lCs and costs. Obstructing Thoroughfare .—Charles Webster, defendant in above case, was fined 20s and costs for allowing his dray and horse to remain for a period of three hours unattended on a public road. Cruelty to Animals.—C. Webster was also charged with this offence, but as it arose out of the previous case, it was dismissed. Drunk and Making Cse op Obscene Language.—Wm. Cromie was charged with this offence on thi night of the races. Sergeant Mullin gave him the character of being a quiet well conducted person usually. His Worship in consideration of thin, and as probably defendant thought he had a little license the night of the races, only fined him 10s and costs. Breach op Stage Carriage Ordinance.—John Olphert and Wm. Paget were charged with plying for hire with unlicensed vehicles on the 13th inst from Oxford to the racecourse. Wm. Olphert said he only pufc people over the river and got no money for it. His Worship dismissed the cases on this occasion, as the River Eyre, which had to ba crossed on the way to the racecourse, was very high for foot passengers. Breach of Cattle Trespass Ordinance.—J. R. Pearson was fined 5s and costs for allowing two head of cattle to wander at large. Slaughter Licenses.—Slaughter licences were granted to J. R. Gorton, View Hill; Andrew Reany, of View Hill; Alexander Moderate, West Eyreton; and John Pawson, Oxford ; the police having no objection. Civil Case.—Milson v Meredith, claim £9 8s fid, was heard, and judgment given for defendant, He ordered his expenses, 10s, to be handed over to the Oxford Mechanics' Institute.
