COMMERCIAL.
Shipments of grain continue on a large scale, but very tew farmers 5 lots are coining forward. Wheat is quiet, but prime samples would be taken at 3s 3d. Flour is wanted at £9 10s, but the majority of millers are full of orders, aud do not care to make forward delivery sales. Bran is selling at lOd in Cbristchurch, demand being now very quiet. Oats meet a steady enquiry for local wants at 2s 9d, but shipments still remain 3s f.0.b., which leaves no margin of profit at present prices. The large holders, however, are convinced that prices are already higher than the appearance of outside markets warrant. Barley is quite neglected, but prices in Melbourne are likely to encourage shipments to that market. Potatoes are t arely ripe yet. but several large lots have been sold.' at £2 up to £2 2s 6d. Cheese is firm at Bd, and butter at Is 2d. A moderate amount of business has been transacted in the import markets during the past week : Stocks have been increased by the arrival of the Tlntern Abbey from London on the 2nd inst. The clearances for London have been, Hudson, Ist inst, with full cargo of wheat, and Lady Jocelyn, 7th inst, with wool,wheat, tallow,skins,&c. Spirits— Hennessy's case brandy, low in stock; 31s 6d is the priee quoted for clearing lines ; bulk moves oft" in small parcels at 9s 3d to 9s 6d; Campbelton whisky has been placed freely at 5s Gd ; Islay meets with good trade sale at 7 s to 7s 6d ; case and bulk old torn are in good demand at 14s 6d, and 5s to 5s :jd, i.b.; Wolfe's aromatic schnapps have been quitted at 22s 6d for pints and quarts, i.b. A fair trade has been done in sugars at our last quotations. Teas command attention at full rates, several large parcels of good quality have been disposed of at Is 9d in half chests and Is lod in boxes, lb. A line of JH'ry's cocoa has been Bold to arrive at Is 4d to Is 4|d; the stocks of this article at present are extremely low. Ales and stout meet with steady sale at last quotations. Kerosene—A very good trade sale has been done in this line at from 2s Id to 2s 2d, d.p. Price's Belmont candles move oiF in parcels at IOJd to lid. The trade sales in tobaccos nave been numerous; case twist has been placed at Is 9id to Is lOd, quarter tierces, Is 9d to Is 9}d for iest brands. The demand for corn sacks is falling off, and consequently prices are much weaker; 12a to 12s 3d are the prices quoted. Sales of standard iron have been very numerous, stocks getting very low; £l6 10s to £l7 is the price obtained for medium size parcels. A line of No 9 fencing wire has been quitted at £24 15s per ton; sales in other numbers Save been rather slow. Cement has been sold in Lyttelton at 20s 6d per barrel.
