Melville Walker was deputed by the ratepayers of the Kowai road district to present Mr W. G, Fendall, who bad held the office of chairman to the Road Board for nine years, with a handsome gold hunting watch, accompanied with an address, the latter bearing the signatures of a large number of the principal ratepayers, in recognition of his valuable services in the interests of the district. The testimonial was selected by Mr Wm. Vaughan from the shop of Mr Sandstein, jeweller, Christchurch, and in the case was engraven an appropriate inscription. Immigrants per Tintern Abbey.— Yesterday being the day advertised for engagements to take place at the depot, Addington, a large number of employers attended. Single women were, as usual, in the greatest request, and many persons were disappointed in obtaining domestic servants. Most of the married couples and single men obtained situations at satisfactory wages. The following rates were given Married couples for farms and stations, £55 to £65 per annum and all found; single men, ploughmen, and farm labourers, £4O to £6O per annum ; domestic servants, £2O to £25 ; nurse girls, £l2 to £ls. The Cicero, with about 200 immigrants, is now daily expected.

New Boating Club.—A meeting convenued for the purpose of establishing a new Boating Club in Christchurch was held last evening at Warner’s Commercial Hotel, Mr Appleby in the chair. Upwards of twenty were present. Mr Tosswill stated that it was proposed to form a new club, having boating sheds near the hospital as being more convenient for members who resided in the northern and western parts of the city. The piece of land already promised by the City Council to the Canterbury Boating Club would form a convenient site for a shed, which Messrs England Bros, were willing to erect for £55. This shed would be 50ft by 15ft. Messrs England Bros were also willing to erect another shed 36ft by 12ft for £3B ss. Mr VVachsman moved—“ That a Boating Club be formed, having sheds near the hos pital." Mr Gray seconded the motion, which was agreed to. On the motion of Mr H. Brittan, seconded by Mr E. Hawkes, a committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs Appleby, Tosswill, Gray, Wachsm«,n, and the mover to canvass for sul scriptions, enroll members, and to obtain infoi mation respecting the club, the committee to report to a general meeting to be held at Warner s Hotel on Thursday next. Slaughter-house Licenses, Leeston —A special meeting of Justices of the Pence will be held on Friday, 14th iust, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Leeston, to consider applications for licenses to slaughter.

Wife Poisoning.— At the R,M. Court, Timaru, on Wednesday last, Thomas Davis, of Waimate, was charged, on remand, with attempting to poison his wife, Caroline Davis. From the evidence it appears that they were married on March 25th, and that about a month afterwards the accused gave his wife a mixture which made her ill. Subsequently he put something into a cup of tea which she drank, and it made her ill again. This proved to be sugar of lead. The prisoner was committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. The German Church— The anniversary of the opening of the German Church was celebrated yesterday. In the morning Divine service was held in the church by the pastor, the Rev L. Lohr. A tea meeting, at which nearly 400 persons were present, was held in the evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, the tables being presided over by Mesdames Ruddenklau, Kruse, Elmers, Carl, W. Schmidt, Arbs, Meng, Honike, Zimmerman, Fuchs, Taylor, Ebert; there was also a bachelors’ table, at which Misses Hammer and Kissel presided. After tea a public meeting was held, Mr Kruse in the chair. The secretary (Mr Schwartz) read a report, by which it appeared that on the 14th November, 1871, it was first determined to form a German congregation, and to build a church. The resolution then arrived at had been carried into effect, and the expense of the whole undertaking was nearly £3OOO. Addresses were delivered by the Rev L. Lohr, Rev W. J. Habens, Rev H C. M. Watson, Rev C. Fraser, and Rev A. F. Douglas. During the evening some fine vocal music was sung by the members of the church choir, accompanied on the harmonium by Mr J. T. M. Smith.

Cathedral Commission.— At a meeting of the Cathedral Commission, held at the College Library on Wednesday, April 28'th, at which there were present the Most Rev the Primate, the Very Rev the Dean, the Rev Canons Cotterill and Willock, the Rev C. Bowen, the Hon J. B. A.'Acland, his Honor H. B. Gresson, Esq, and Messrs W. D. Wood and Strange, the acting treasurer and secretary, Mr 0. R. Blakiston, and the superintending architect, Mr B. W. Mountfort, being also present, it was announced (says the Church News) by the ai’chitect that the second contract wouldbe completed in about six weeks’ time, with the exception of the western doorway. Much consultation ensued as to the next portion of the work to be undertaken by the Commission, and Mr Mountfort urged strongly the importance of obtaining without delay the timber which would be required for the construction of the roof of the nave, in order that sufficient time might be allowed for its being well seasoned, the present time of the year also being the best time for felling timber with a view to its seasoning. Ultimately, the following resolutions were adopted:—l. “ That Mr Mountfort be instructed to advertise at once for tenders for the timber required for the roof of the nave ; and for the erection of the western fagade above the doorway to the top of the stringcourse under the rose window." 2. “That the timber to be advertised for be either black pine or kauri.” It is hoped that, while this last work is in progress, fresh subscriptions will come in, sufficient to enable the Commission to proceed with the arcading of the nave. The Rev 0. Bowen and Mr B. Strange tendered their resignations as members of the Commission, in consequence of their intention to be absent from the province for a considerable period on a visit to England. Appointments. —The Church News supplies the following information regarding diocesan appointments : —“ The Rev W. E. Paige has been appointed by the Most Rev the Bishop of the diocese to the cure of the parochial district of Ashburton, in the place of the Rev J, H. Wills, resigned. The Rev E. R. Otway, of the Diocese of Auckland, has been appointed by the Bishop to the incumbency of the parish of Governor’s Bay. In this case the right of the Board of Nominators to appoint had lapsed, under the provisions of the eleventh clause of Statute No 5 of the General Synod, no nomination having been made by them within eighteen months of the cure having become vacant. Mr Otway may be expected to enter on his duties in the month of June. On his arrival, the Rev H. B. East, who has been officiating as deacon-curate in this parish, will be appointed to fill the same office in the parochial district of Addington. The Yen Archdeacon Harper has been nominated to the Bishop by the Board of Nominators for institution to the incumbency of the parish of Kaiapoi, but it is not very likely that he will accept the offer. The Rev F. 0, Hare, late chaplain to his Excellency Sir James Fergusson, will be appointed, on his arrival from Western Australia, to the temporary charge of the parish of Riccarton, in the absence of the Rev 0, Bowen. Lastly, Mr C. Coates, a student of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, and a passenger by the ship Cicero, who will, in all probability, be ordained deacon shortly after his arrival,’ is to be appointed to the assistantcuracy of St. John Baptist’s, Christchurch.”

Now that contagious diseases are abroad, every housewife should use carbolic soap for household purposes, as it is a thorough disinfectant, and recommended by the faculty.— [Advt.l
