MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, May 7. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., 11. M.) Drunk and Disorderly.— Mary Cunningham, a very old offender, arrested for being drunk and behaving in a disorderly manner in the domain, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. George Brown, charged with drunkenness, was lined 20s.
Wife Desertion. —R. J. Greening was brought up on remand from Dunedin, charged with deserting his wife and seven children. Mrs Greening had asked his Worship to allow her to withdraw the charge, as her husband had promised to behave himself for the future. His Worship said that in deference to the feelings of the complainant he would accede to thejrequest that had been imulo to him, but he felt that defendant deserved very little consideration. George Wilson was charged on warrant with deserting his wife and family. Mrs Wilson stated that she had four children. Her husband was in the habit of deserting
her at intervals, as he was constantly in the hahit of getting drunk. When he left her the last time he knew she had not a shilling in the house, and promised that he would returninafewdays. She did not see him afterwards for two months. Defendant said lie had been laid up with low fever in a public house at Eyreton. He had only been working for a week when he fell ill. His Worship administered a severe lecture to defendant for his heartlessness, and ordered him to pay £1 per week towards the suppoi 4 of his wife and family. Vagrancy.— Herman Von Jetson, who had been found in Mr Gherkin’s dairy at the Tai Tapu, helping himself without permission, and who had been several times before the Court charged with wandering about that district, was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment with hard labor.
