BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The weekly meeting of the Board of Education was held at 7 p.m. Present: Messrs J. Ingiis (chairman), A. Duncan, T. W. Maude, W. Montgomery, H. R. Webb, and J. N. Tosswill. PKEBBLETON. The district committee requested the Board to sanction the acceptance of Mr Anderson's tender for the purchase and removal of the old school buildings at £4O 10s. The Board sanctioned the acceptance of Mr Anderson's tender. SOUTH ASHBURTON. The Board sanctioned the calling of a meeting of the inhabitants of the newlyproclaimed district of South Ashburton, on Wednesday, sth instant, for the purpose of electing a school committee. INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS. The Board directed that Mr Hammond be gazetted as an inspector of schools, Mr Restell to be senior inspector. WEST CHBISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the secretary of the district committee, asking if the committee can proceed with gravelling the grounds of the Lincoln road school; also enclosing an account of £lO 6s 6d for gymnastic apparatcs. The question of gravelling the grounds was deferred. The snm of £lO 6s 6d was ordered to be paid for gvmnastic apparatus. EAST OXFORD. A letter was read from the chairman of the district, asking the Board to sanction the cost of a pump for the well lately sunk. The Board sanctioned an expenditure up to £7 10s. WOODEND. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction the appointment of Miss Mary Zweibruck as pnp'l teacher; also to order payment on a contract for painting, and £6 6s for a stove. The Board sanctioned the payments; also the appointment of Miss Zweibruck subject to examination in June. SALTWATER CREEK. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, requesting a reply to one from the committee, inclosing plans and specifications for additions to school house; also stating that the committee were of opinion that Mr Cuthbert's account for plans slould be paid. The matter as to plans and specifications was ordered to stand over. The Board decided to sanction the payment of Mr Cuthbert's account, which would ultimately have to be paid by the district in consequence of the mismanagement of the committee. LEESTON. A letter was read from the chairman of the Leeston committee, inclosing resolutions in favor of establishing a side school at Doyleston. The Board decided to let the matter stand over until the estimates were passed. EAST CHBISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the secretary of the district committee, requesting permission for Miss Marion Reese to teach in the Bingsland school; also asking the Board to sanction the appointments of Mr Joseph Coates, of the Model Public School, West Maitland, N.S.W., as head master, and Miss Ann Jane Bolton, of the Scotch Ladies' College, Melbourne, as head mistress of the main district school. The Board decided to allow Miss Marion Reese to teach in the Bingsland Echool. The Board also sanctioned the appointments of Mr J. Coates and Miss Ann Jane Bolton, as head masiter and mistress of the Main District School in Gloucester street. REPORT FROM THE BOARD OF EXAMINERS. The board of examiners reported that they recommended Mr J. Coates and Miss A. J. Bolton to be placed in the first class of certificated teachers, their respective grades in the class to be hereafter determined. That they saw no reason for raising the classification of Mr Newell Phillips without examination. That the testimonials in favor of Mr John Smith, of Nelson, do not afford sufficient information as to his attainments to enable the examiners to assign him the place he would probably hold on examination, The examiners recommended that he be placed in the third class, and his long experience allowed the examiners to suggest that he be placed in the first division. The examiners also made certain suggestions as to teachers' certificates. The Board accepted the classification of the board of examiners as to Mr Coates and Miss Bolton. The Board also sanctioned the report of the examiners as to Mr N. Phillips and Mr Smith. The remainder of the report of the examiners t.s to the certificates of teachers, was deferred for consideration until next week. LUESTON. A special report of the inspector on the Leeston school was read. It wag decided that during the illness of the mistress, and ur.til the appointment of a permanent assistant, two temporary assistants be employed by the committee. TIMARU. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, stating that the committee approved of the alteration of the boundary of the Timaru school district as suggested by the residents of the Claremont district; also enclosing a letter from Mr Wyke Smith, acting head master, stating that it was his intention to lecture weekly to the upper classes on chemistry and natural philosophy, and requesting that two lamps might be ordered to light his room for that purpose ; asking the Board to place upon the estimates the sum of £35 to purchase two chandeliers for lighting the large room; also enclosing a list of the teaching staff ; stating that Mr McClure wished two of his sons to be employed as pupil teachers; also, an application from the head mistress, Miss Forbes, for house rent. The Board agreed to recemmend the proclamation of the Claremont district, also to sanction the purchase of two lamps at 5s 6d, but with regard to the chandeliers, the Board were of opinion that temporary lights would be sufficient when the room was required. As to the employment of Mr McOlure's sons, the Board would inquire whether there was a vacancy, and the Board sanctioned the usnal allowance to Miss Forbes for house rent. CARLETON. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction the acceptance of Mr Bennett's tender for the erection of the new school buildings for £540. The secretary was directed to reply that the Board regretted they could not sanction the acceptance of Mr Bennett's tender, as ii was very much higher than the Board believed the buildings could be erected for,
LYTTELTON. The offer of the Borough Council for additional land for school purposes near the Colonists' Hall, adjourned from last week, was again considered, and it was resolved that the Board decline to accept the offer, but were willing to treat for 60ft frontage on the Sumner road at a valuation. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAIRMAN. The business transacted by the chairman was approved. The Board, then adjourned.
