CANTERBURY AUTUMN MEETING.
Saturdy, April 24, 1875. Stewards—Messrs G. B. Parker, J. Brabazon, M, Studholmo, H. P. Lance, E. L, Ciogstoun, Hon. E. W. Stafford, F. W. Delamain. Judge—Sir J. 0. Wilson, C.B. K.S.I. Starter—Mr P. Campbell, Clerk of the Course— Mr B. W. Millett. Handicapper — Mr H, P. Lance. Clerk of the Scales—Mr R. Hustler, Matters looked very unpromising as regards the weather this morning, and a steady drizzle set in at about 8.80, which threatened to make racing unpleasant. The quantity of rain that fell last night had of course made a difference in the going on the racecourse, and it was supposed to be all in favour of the new favorite, Castaway, who, after his performances in the St. George’s Handicap yesterday, was installed at the head of the list of quotations, and brought more money in the various sweeps last night than any other animal in the race. It was also argued, with some show of reason, that the rain falling would not improve the chance of Templeton, with his big burden to carry, and the little horse went back in the market, though from the running of his stable companions, Hercules, Pungawerewere, and Elfin King, it was evident that the Yaldhurst stable was in form. The weights for the Flying Handicap appear to have given satisfaction, and the handicapper let Kory O’More in at a more reasonable weight than he had allotted to him in the St. George’s, Guy Fawkes, too, had friends last night, who backed their opinion in small sums, and the Phoebe colt, on the strength of his Champagne win, brought a good price in the various sweeps on the event. For the Hurdle race, Tommy Dodd was first favorite, though the Kowai Pass boys backed Mousetrap, and mighty were the words with which they sung the praises of the pony. The Cavalry race was interesting to the soldiers and their friends, but not much appreciated by the general public, though they ought to have remembered that the most amusing race of the meeting was this event last time it was run for. The threatening weather kept a good many people away, and we are afraid that the different booth-holders hardly did the business they expected. The racing commenced, as usual on the second day, with the Hurdle race, which promised to be a more interesting event than these races have been on the Christchurch course during the last few years. It was hardly expected that Rory O’More would show up with 12st tlbs to carry, though his ability to carry this impost and win, was believed in by those who knew the performances of the horse over the sticks in Victoria. Enderson, too, is such a well-known performer in this line, that the pair were looked on as likely to pull through if the owner considered it worth while to start his big gelding. Tommy Dodd, too, who has been performing successfully in the jumping line, had friends, and Mousetrap and Medora both had a following. Alice Grey, though she has won here once, was very little thought of. Five saddled up and faced the starter, and the race terminated as follows: Handicap Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs; added to a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each for acceptors.
