MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, April 24. [Before W. D. Carruthers, Esq.] Creating a Disturbance in a Licensed House. —Frederick Bonar was charged with creating a disturbance in a licensed house. It appeared that defendant went into the Bush Inn, Riccarton, and demanded drink ; on being refused, he became very abusive, and would not leave the house. Defendant said he was very sorry, he had had too much drink. The Bench fined defendant 40s, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Gambling on the Racecourse. —William Hobbs was charged with vagrancy, in gambling on the racecourse yesterday, by playing under and over. Mr Thomas, who appeared for the defendant, said that there was no doubt his client had broken the law, but it would not occur again. Mr Hobbs had pui’chased the right of amusements on the course, and as these games had been tolerated in former years it was supposed that they would be this year. Chief Detective Feast said that defendant had been cautioned with others, but these men having bought the right of amusements from the Jockey Club thought they had the right to gamble. He bad no objection to the case being dismissed, but he trusted that the Bench would caution defendant, as, under no circumstances hereafter, would gambling be allowed. His Worship dismissed the case with a caution. John Burgess and Josiah Cohen were charged with a similar offence, and were dismissed with a caution. Drunkenness. Helen Anderson was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Gloucester street, last evening. The case was proved, and defendant fined 20s, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Threatening Language. —Edward McCourt, who had been apprehended under a warrant, was brought up, charged with using threatening language to his wife, and remanded until Monday,
