A special meeting of the City Council was held yesterday, to consider the draft deeds of submission to arbitration between the Corporation and tenants on the Corporation reserve re the widening of Prince’s street. Ultimately it was resolved that previous to the adoption of submissions to arbitration the tenants be requested to state what amounts they would be satisfied with, taking down and removing each of their holdings to the intended width of the street. Major Atkinson has resigned the command of the district at the end of the month. He is succeeded by Sub-Inspector Rowan. Mr A. C. Atkinson remains in the province. He has purchased the Commercial Hotel at Tokomairiro, and is arranging for the purchase of the Club at Invercargill.

Invercargill, April 23. The salmon ova received from the Clyde hy the ship Timaru were taken to-day to the ponds at Makarewai. The ova latest collected were first unpacked, and the first sight was not promising, and it is feared that 'he final result of the importation will be unsatisfactory. A quantity of eggs were perfectly opaque, a sign that all vitality has departed, and not a few were in a crushed condition; but it was evident that no pains had been spared m packing. A large number of the eggs retain a healthful purple appearance; but some of the best looking of these, cn examination by a magnifying glass, were found to contain no vital germ; they had not been fecundated. It is believed that the majority of the eggs found to be opaque had been fecundated, and that those vhich retain a purple colour had never been It is just possible, however, that some of flu purple colored eggs may contain a germ of life,
