MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, April 12. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Embezzlement. —Charles James, late treasurer of the City of Christchurch Lodge, of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, was brought up, charged with embezzlement. Chief Detective Feast said that prisoner had been arrested in Auckland. Mr Garrick, who appeared to conduct the prosecution, applied for a remand until Thursday, as he was not ready to go on with the case. His Worship granted the remand. The prisoner applied to be admitted to bail. Mr Garrick said he hoped that the Court would require substantial bail, as embezzlements had been already traced amounting to £370. His Worship said that he should require prisoner to find two sureties in £2OO each, and himself in £4OO.
Delirium. Robert Templeton was brought up suffering from delirium. It appeared that Templeton, who was suffering from measles, broke out of bed this morning, and drank some brandy. He was remanded for medical treatment.
Manslaughter. Jeannette McKinlay was charged with manslaughter. Inspector Buckley said that the woman went home drunk, and overlaid her child. As an inquest was to be held he would apply for a remand. His Worship remanded the prisoner until Monday. Neglected Children.— Duncan McKinlay, Malcolm McKinlay, John McKinlay, and Jane McKinlay, children of the lastnamed prisoner, were brought up under the Neglected Children’s Act, and remanded until Monday.
Affiliation. —A case against Jas. Robinson for neglecting to support an illegitimate child, of which he was alleged to be the father,was, at defendant’s request, adjourned to Monday. Violent Assault. —Edward McNilty Avas charged with assaulting George Mill. The assault took place at the Dunsandel Hotel, where, as complainant stated, defendant struck him on the head with a tumbler, and tried to gouge him. Defendant said that complainant was playing at cards with a man named Sullivan, and struck him. He (defendant) then struck complainant with the tumbler, for which he was very sorry. Fined 10s.
