BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday, at the Council Chambers. Present—Mr R. J. S. Harman (chairman), his Worship the Mayor, hon J. T. Peacock, and Messrs J. N. Tosswilland T. Fisher. Mr Peacock reported with reference to the land which he bad been to see about, that he had gone over the ground with Mr Potts, and considered one or two acres should be obtained behind the bank, at that portion of the works shown on the plan. The chairman said he had instructed the land required to be surveyed. The Board approved of the tracing and coloring of the works submitted at last meeting, and instructed that a number be struck off for distribution. It was decided that the chairman, the hon J. T. Peacock, and Mr Tosswill, bring up a complete report of the various works executed, with the amount of the Board’s present indebtedness, to be submitted to the Provincial Council, accompanied by a map for reference, after being approved by the Board.

The overseer reported that he had finished the river end of the new embankment by the Avon and Styx junction. He had carefully examined the Christchurch overflow channel, from Templar’s upwards, with the view of finding the best site for a covering bank in connection with the present one at Styx junction. He had taken the levels of what he thought to be the best site for this purpose, A bank containing from 8000 to 10,000 cubic yards, with a cutting in front, as shewn on the accompanying plan, would be sufficient, and he would suggest the expediency of the work being erected across that channel at the earliest convenience of the Board. No changes in the river likely to affect the works had taken place during the past month, and all the works were in good order. After some discussion of a conversational nature on the report, it was determined that the work of the bank, shown on the plan, should be undertaken, as the bank will complete the line of defence of the Board’s works, and close the only probable remaining outlet for the water in the event of a fresh occurring in the Waimakariri. A definite motion, moved by Mr Tosswill—“ That the chairman be authorised to call for tenders for the erection of a shingle bank, to be erected upon a site to be determined by the Board, commencing in the neighbourhood of the western corner of section 4701, and running towards the north-east corner of section 4574,” was agreed to. Mr Peacock moved—“ That a rate of one penny in the £ be levied upon the general district, and a rate of one penny additional upon the special district, for the current year.” Mr Fisher seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Some accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
