NEWS OF THE DAY.
St John's Parish Meeting.—lt will be seen from our advertising columns that this meeting will be held this evening. Theatre Royal.—On Saturday evening the play of " Temptation " was successfully repeated. Miss Colville will appear to-night as Leah, in the drama of that name. Telegraphic.—The steamer Albion is expected to leave the Buff at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Telegrams for the Austalian Colonies or Europe, via the Java Cable, will be received at the Christchurch telegraph office up till 10 a.m. to-morrow (Tuesday). Accident. —A sad accident occurred this morning to a boy named Charles Fitzsimonds, on the Breakwater, Lyttelton. The youth was standing near one of the waggons when the driver unhooked the chain and the horse made a start, the chain catching the boy on the leg and breaking it just below the knee. He was taken up to Dr Rouse's, and the leg set. 1.0.G.T. —A concert, under the auspices of the Southern Cross Lodge, will be held this evening, in the new Good Templar Lodgeroom, for which the services of Madam and Miss Winter, Mr J. Rowley, jun., and a number of other': have been secured. The programme nV" 'ether gives promise of a most successful entertainment. Wesleyan Church, St Alban's—• We hear that the anniversary of this church is to be celebrated with more than ordinary eclat. The choir, assisted by amateurs and professional friends, are rehearsing selections from the twelfth Mass, Messiah, Elijah, IDettingen Te Deum, &c, and will be accompanied by the organ, which will be played by Mr Searell.
Attempted Suicide.—lnformation was received in town last evening that a man named George Johnson, living at Lincoln, had attempted suicide by cutting his throat some time during the afternoon. Johnson, who has been drinking hard for some time past, was found by some neighbours who went into his house sitting in a chair with his throat cut. A messenger was at once dispatched to Prebbleton for Dr Durham, who returned and attended to the man. It is considered doubtful if he will recover. Presentation.—A past-master's jewel was presented to Mr W. Mills, late collector of Customs, Christchurch, on his passing through the province by the s.s. Ladybird yesterday. It was presented by Past-Master Hugh McLellan, on behalf of the Lodge of Unanimity, that gentleman being Senior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Canterbury. About twenty of the brethren were present at the Harbor Master's office where the presentation was made. It would have been made by Brother Anderson, W.M. of the lodge, but his duties as Warder unfortunately prevented his being present. Mr Mills left by the s.B. Ladybird yesterday, for the purpose of paying a visit to the old country. The jewel was made by Mr Procter, of Christchurch, and is a credit to colonial workmanship.
