Passengers for Lyttelton—Dr. Von Haast, Mr Von Haast, Mr Bennett, Mr McSymond, and two in the steerage ; 54 tons of cargo. London, March 30. The Queensland mails were delivered yesThe St Osyth, steamer, arrived via the Cape of Good Hope from Melbourne in eight days. B J PARIS, March 81. M. Dufaure's circular is particularly aimed against Bonapartism. The Propaganda says that the definitive establishment of the Kepublic must be respected by all parishes. London, April 3, The wheat market is quiet. A million and a half bushels are en route. Wool is unchanged. There is little business doing. The revenue for the year amounts to seventy-four and a half millions. The Pope has exhorted the Prussian Bishops to continue their resistance and vote against Bismarck. Belgium complains of the offensive language of the clerical press.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS. MELBOURNE, April C>. Parliament is summoned for the despatch of business on the 25th of May. The Premier aud Postmaster-General spoke at the banquet the other night, bat vouchsafed no indication of the Ministerial policy. An idea is gaining irround that it is their intention to impose direct taxation, either on property or income. All the Ministers and some GOO guests have gone to Ararat to-day, on the occasion of the opening of the railway. It is rumored that the Minister of Mines, who is also the Minister of Education, intends relinquishing the former office, so as to devote himself to the latter.
Governor Musgrave, of South Australia, is on a visit here. Re proceeds to Sydney today with his sister en route to British Columbia via the Californian mail. The Macgregor left San Francisco on the 30th. II nsi or, the Richmond wife murderer, is ordered to be kept in confinement during the Governor's pleasure. Mr Hastings, the American Good Templnr, has been lecturing, but is not creating much sensation. The harvest yields will probably show nearly. 17 bushels to the acre. The vintage is also likely to be good. The season has bean very dry until the last day or two. Sydney. The Sydney Cup was run on Thursday Six horses started. Imperial,!; Reprieve 2; Lurline, 3. The race was won by a length pretty easily. Lurline also won the aliased stakes on Friday, beating a moderate field. At this meeting Sir Hercules Robineon won no less than seven races, aud got places in five others. McGrath, a boarding house keeper, of Grenfell, and his wife have been committed for the murder of a miner. The Treasurer's budget shows the revenue for 1875 to be £3.600,000, and the expenditure £3,750,000. There is no change this session, but in the next a modified Stamp Act will be introduced, and the tariff modified in a free-trade direction. Murphy, the husband of the woman poisoned at Shoalhaven, has been committed to trial for the murder of his wife and Mrs Roland. The Government intend introducing an amended Land Bill to limit selection to minors above six years, and increase the area of selection to 640 acres. Favorable accounts have been received from the Palmer River. Plenty of gold has been got, but it is the sickly season. A number of deaths are reported. The blacks are very troublesome. There is great opposition to Chinese immigration, which is likely to lead to a conflict. Two thousand Chinese are coming. Adelaide. Mr Boothby's harvest statistics state that an area of 839,638 acres are under wheat ; the yield is estimated at 9,862,693 bushels, being an average of 11 bushels 451 b. The surplus of breadstuffs available for exportation amounts to 183,000 tons. The Gothenburg fund has reached over *6OOO. H.M.S. Nymphe calls here en route to Sydney. She is expected about the Queen's birthday. The Chief Justice is acting as Governor during the Governor's absence. Hobart Town. Typhoid fever having broken out on board H.M.S. Baracoula, she has proceeded to Sydney, in consequence of the want of hospital accommodation. COMMERCIAL. Melbourne. Very little business is doing. Breadstuffs continue firm. Wheat, 4s 9£d. Oats have been sold up to 4s 4d for prime stout qualities. Hennessy's brandies are in fair demand at a slight advance, and a small advance required for Eleme and other raisins.
INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, April 11. A fire took place last night in the ship yards of Henderson and Spraggon, David Gouk, and Armstrong, in Custom House street, which destroyed the sheds, spars, ships' knees, tools, &c. The loss ia estimated as follows :—Henderson and Spraggon, £6OO ; Gonk, £3OO ; Armstrong, £3OO. The vessels on the stocks were all saved. The pitch and dry material burned with great fierceness. The houses on the cliffs above were threatened. The engines, as usual, did not arrive till the fire was half over, but then they kept it from extending, the yards being on the water's edge. The flames illuminated the whole of the harbor and shipping. There were thousands of spectators. As the engines were coming up through the crowd they knocked a woman down, but she was not seriously injured. The fire originated in Henderson and Spraggon's yards, but the cause is unknown. There was no insurance on any of the property. The shoemakers have formed a trade society. A Maketu telegram states—" The departure of Sir Donald McLean last night was celebrated with almost "Vice-Regal magnificence. He was accompanied to the beach by nearly five hundred people. On the Luna reaching the head of the Katuna river he was saluted with six thirty pounds guns from the shore. On Sir Donald reaching the vessel, Captain Fairchild illuminated [the whole ship, which was returned with deafening cheers from the shore. About 7 p.m. the Luna steamed away. Wellington, April 10. A large sale of city property is announced, Mr John Plimmer having disposed of his Waterloo Buildings' block, with its extensive frontage to Lambton Quay, Hunter street. and Custom House Quay (including Old Noah's Ark and wharfage rights), for the sum of £12,500. The purchaser is Mr Jacob Joseph, Wairarapa. The Belvedere saw mill property, containing some 1160 acres, has been sold by auction, and realised nearly £5 per acre. Wellington, April 12. The exports from this port for the last quarter amounted to £265,0C3. There was no phormium exported to England during the quarter, and only three little lots of about a thousand pounds declared value to Melbourne. The writ for the Rangitekei election is issued. The nomination is next Monday, and the polling on the 24th. Arrived—The Ladybird from the South at 1.30 p.m. Dunedin, April 12. The oriminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning. His- Honor Chief Justice JPrendergast presided, and
there was a large muster of the Bar, including both practising and non-practising members. It was intended on the part of the Bar to present an address, but the Chief Justice previously expressed a wish that this should not be done. In his charge he referred in graceful terms to the retirement of Judge Chapman, who brought on his appointment to the district—a practical knowledge which was much needed, and (lis charged his duties with great ability, great perseverance, great patience, and great painstaking. He next alluded to District Judge Cray's death as a serious loss to the country. Referring to the calendar, he said he failed to see that the number of homicides resulting from drink, and the other cases, denoted any particular state of morality or want of morality, or called for particular observation.
