CITY COUNCIL.
Saturday, March 6.
The adjourned special meeting of the Council to consider the application for cabdrivers’ licenses was held this morning. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Hart, Bishop, Jones, Farr, Calvert, Ick, and Gapes. Dr Foster was also present at the meeting. The following applications were granted:— Owners : J. Dal wood, George Wells, J. Cooke, Thomas Blythe, Cornelius Sexton, John Horner, Wm. Jordan, Henry Dodd (two applications), J. Garland (two applications.) Drivers : J. Dalwood, G. Wells, J. Cooke, T. Blythe, Thomas Stout, C. Sexton, J, Horner, H. Dodd, W. Jordan. The following new applications were read and remitted for enquiry. Owners : T. Goodyer, sen., H. N. Goodyer, H. Clarke, F. Willcox, J. Hunter, D. Howard, L. Zouch, H. Jordan (two applications), W. Jordan, Charles Heggie, J. Dalwood, S. Thomas, P. King, Thomas Hazard (two applications), E. Sharp, M. Hamilton. Drivers. Charles Heggie, L. Zouch, T. Goodyer, sen., W. Jordan, H. M. Goodyer, H. Jordan, J. Hunter, G. Whincop, J. Harper, jun., J. Harper, sen., Hans Clark, S. Thomas, P. King, M. Hamilton, D. Howard, Thos Hazard, E. Sharp, F. Chambers. The following additional applications were received: Drivers; John McVicar, J. Miller, Wm Garraway, P. Hamilton, A. Brown, F. Willcox, K. Balloon. Owner :J. Miller. The whole of the applications were ordered to stand over until Monday week. A letter was read from A. McTaggart asking for an interview with the Council respecting the granting of his license. On the motion of Cr Jones the request was granted. Cr Gapes moved—“ That the city surveyor be instructed to re-open the cab-stands forthwith. ” Cr Jones seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Mayor stated that he had been informed that a letter would be laid before the Council on Monday evening from the cabmen, intimating that their guarantee to their solicitor had been withdrawn, as they did not wish for any more litigation. The Inspector of Hackney Carriages was directed to report upon the new applications at the ordinary meeting of the Council on Monday week, the applicants in the meanwhile not to be molested by the police for plying without licenses. The Council then adjourned until Monday evening at the usual hour.
