The previous evening he (accused) appeared very strange, and said some people were chasing him. He shortly after went to bed and asked witness to stop with him during the night. He promised to do so, but as the accused went to sleep at hajf-past nine, he left him to himself. This morning about a quarter-past eight he went into accused’s room, and found him sitting on the bed with a knife in his hand, covered with blood. There was a cut in his throat and one on his wrist. He washed the wounds, and sent for the police. Accused had been drinking for a short time past. Remanded to Lyttelton for eight days. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. H. F. Allen was charged on remand with this offence. Mr Rcston, chief gaoler, told the Bench that accused was now perfectly recovered from the effects of drink. He was of a mild disposition, and was a very clever man at his profession. He had expressed his intention that morning of joining the Good Templars, and he (Mr Reston) was sure that if he did so he would soon recover his position. Accused repeated this intention to the Bench, and said he knew there were a few persons in Christchurch who would lend him a helping hand if he did so. His Worship expressed a sincere hope that he would carry out the intention, and discharged him.
