I will play Mr Robert Boswell (whose greatest achievements in Draughts playing have been to suffer defeats by rusty second and third class players, for sums varying from £2 to £10) lifty games at draughts for £IOO aside, and if Mr Boswell wishes, I will take up all his public challenges besides; but I will not depart from my usual way of playing for recreation, to play him a single match for any smaller sum than £IOO, unless I get £lO for playing. And since Mr Boswell has taken his recent defeat with such a bad grace as to lose his temper and refuse to play me any more friendly matches unless 1 would play him for money, to which he knew I had a strong aversion, and was so anxious to push himself forward as the cat’spaw of his backers, who were urging him on to enrich their coffers, that he offered me a game to start, I shall therefore be only too glad to have done pLying friendly matches with such a rude unmannerly opponent.
