[Via Sydney.] Melbourne, February 1. A fire occurred last night in Bouverie street, Carlton, by which several small houses were destroyed. David White, lately released from Parramatta gaol, has been arrested for being illegally at large in Victoria. Mr Goldsmith, of Melbourne, in a match with Mr Smith, of Sydney, won the fourth chess match in an hour and a half. An interesting entertainment was given tonight by the members of the Telegraph Electrical Society, at-the Athemeum. The Bench has decided that volunteers in uniform cannot be legally arrested tor debt. In reference to a telegram received from the Imperial Government with regard to a contribution towards the government of Fiji, it is stated that the application was made under an impression that it was the desire of Victoria to contribute. The Government is going to reply that it does not understand the grounds on which the application is made, as there is no reason to believe that the finances of Fiji are insufficient for the means of government. Forbes, N.S.W., February 1. We have had a splendid rain here. It fell all day on Saturday and Sunday, and has been general both up and down the river. Mtjdgee. N.S.W., February 1. We had a fine downfall of rain yesterday. It has done an immense amount of good in the district. The weather still looks unsettled, with 'very appearance of more wet. Clarence River Heads, N.S.W., Feb. 1. The Darwin, a small steamer from Melbourne, bound to the Endeavor River, put in here through stress of weather to-day at L4O p.m. Brisbane, January 31. The officers and crew of the Barracouta were entertained at dinner at the School of Arts and the Town Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. They were very successful gatheiings. Adelaide, January 31. A private London telegram announces that Yarrie Forster was lost overboard from the Hesperus. Deceased was the only son of Mr Anthony Forster, formerly one of the proprietors of the Register, The South Australian Insurance Company shows a balance to the credit of profit and loss of £24,000, and a 10 per cent dividend is declared. Proto Martyr, a racing entire, arrived from Mauritius yesterday. Benjamin Newman, an old chartist, has died suddenly. Wheat, 3s lOd. HOBART Town, January 3. The boat Excelsior was caught in a squall on the Huon River, and swamped. The owner and three passengers, including a mother and child, were drowned. Six were saved. A scene occurred before the Quarterly Licensing Bench. Mr Smith, a magistrate, charged the City Council with allowing the police to neglect their duty, whereupon the Mayor threatened to send for a policeman to remove Mr Smith from the Bench.
