MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHUECH. Saturday, February 13. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, 8.M.) WIFE DESERTION. J. E. Anderson was charged with deserting his wife and family, who are residing at Ashburton. Defendant said he had not deserted his wife, and had provided for his family ; but she (his wife) would not allow him into the house. After hearing the evidence, his "Worship advised Mrs Anderson to let bygones be bygones, and declined to make any order. DRUNK AND DISOBOERLY. Daisy Cornfoot, who had been several times before the Court for drunkenness, was fined 40s and cab-hire, and cautioned not to appear before the Bench again. Frederick Bench, an old offender, arrested for drunkeness, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labor. Catherine Boyle, an old offender, was given one more chance, and fined 10s. DISOBEYING A SUMMONS FOR ASSAULTING HIS WIFE. John West was charged with this offence. Sergeant Wilson deposed to the arrest of the accused the previous day, in the skittlealky of the Warrick Hotel. He was muddled from drink at the time. Maria West stated that on the Bth February, her husband came home the worse for liquor, and struck her. He had on other occasions struck her violently without any provocation. She was afraid of her life, and wished for a separation. Her husband had for some time been in the habit of calling her ve"ry unseemly names, and illusing her. His Worship told the accused that he thought he (accused) had become incorrigible. When last before him he had promised to take the pledge, and he would no longer believe in his promises. He seemed to be continually knocking his Avife about and spending his earnings. As he was then suffering from the effects of drink, and not lit to bo at large, he Mould remand him to lyttelton for eight days.
