THE NEW PISTOL TRIBUNAL.

{San Francisco PajJer.)

The shooting of General M. G, Cobb, a ■well-known attorney practising in San Francisco, by a woman who supposed she had a grievance, is only another added to a long list of similar instances which have occurred in this city. It is hardly more than two weeks since a woman went for another attorney with a pistol, and was only prevented from killing him by a summary arrest. In a case ante-dating this only a few weeks a woman went for a well-known doctor, and missed him only by a hairs’ breadth. On another occasion a woman fired at a wealthy citizen on the sidewalk and missed him. She went to gaol and her intended victim went to Europe, and has never since been within reach as a witness to a transaction in which he must have had about as much interest as anyone else. In another memorable instance a woman waylaid an attorney on the ferry boat and killed him. In neither of these cases was there any punishment meted out to the offender. In other notable cases where one man waylaid another and sought to kill him because of libellous publications, the Grand Jury did not so much as find an indictment. We have had a series of flagrant outrages, but Grand Juries have impliedly said: ‘ ‘ Shoot away. ” This new tribunal may not suit nervous people. But it is impossible to satisfy everybody.
