BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Monday, February 8. 'sh& Board met at 7 p.m. Present— MessrV Inglw "(chairman), Maude, Montgomery, Duncan, and Gould. ? - : - - ; " FKENCH. FARM. ' The Board decided to proclaim the districts of French Farm and Wainui, as per the boundaries submitted by the committee. ' .■, . , , EAST OXFORD. A request from a Mr Mori is to be allowed to drill the boys at this school, was acceded to, provided it did not interfere with the duties of the drill instructor. TEACHERS' SALARIES. The chairman reported that the vouchers for the imprests for teachers' salaries had >.,- been forwarded to the • Provincial Auditor, • bufcjthat officer I had since left town, and the touchers had not been passed on, aud as it was expected his absence would txteud over some days nothing could be doue in the matter. ' " INSURANCE OF SCHOOLS. The chairman reported that he had pre* pared a circular to the various school committeea repecting stoves, &c, as affecting insurance, and also another regarding unauthorised expenditure. The Board approved of the action. ,EAST CHBISTCHUBCH. The chairman reported that the East Christchurch committee had engaged the \ Avonside school as a side school. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Taylor, Hepworth, and Sinclair, waited on the Board • with, reference to the tenders for school buildings being referred back, and pointed -out that'the sum required was due to the rise in price of materials and labor. The request of the East Christchurch committee, that the inspector should be allowed . to confer with the committee as to the furniture for the Gloucester street school, was granted.: . ORPHANAGE SCHOOL; A letter was read from the Superintendent requesting that the inspector might confer with him on the subject of appointing a head master for the Orphanage school. The inspector was requested to attend. The following applications for increase of salary , were granted:—Lower Heatbcote, Miss Taylor, an increase of £2O; Upper J3eathcote,.Mißß Seager, £ls to be allowed for lodging money. A petition from eighteen householders ajs to the proposed site was read, protesting against the selection of the site for tin.: school as made by the local cbmrjiit'ee. After considerable discussion it. was decided that the Board sanction the recommendation of the committee as to the site. BARRY'S BAY. A letter was read respecting the site of the school, stating that the irregular shape of the site arose from a gulley running through the site. The plans for the schoolmaster's house was forwarded for approval. The Board decided that the Board plans for the master's house should be used. . SOUTHBRIDGE. A letter was read from the committee respecting the repairs of the school, and asking that Mr Early's tender for £47 5s should be accepted. The Board decided to sanction the acceptance of Mr Early's tender. EAST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from the local committee, requesting the Board to pass a. voucher for Mr Kankin's tender for £97 10s, unauthorised expenditure incurred by them on fencing. After some discussion the secretary was instructed to write to the committee stating that the Board would pay this amount, but calling their attention to the 18th section of the Ordinance, and pointing out that it is an absolute necessity that the Board should authorise all expenditure. SCHOLARSHIPS. The Chairman said that the time was approaching for the scholarships, and it was necessary that it should be considered whether any alteration should be made. There were ten scholarships to be competed for, viz., two under eleven years, three under twelve years, three under thirteen years, and two under fourteen. It was agreed that the Rev Mr Habens and Mr J. Colborne-Veel should be requested to act as examiners under the scholarships, and also to state whether they had any alterations to suggest in the ages. Mr Maude suggested that the scholarships should be open alike to girls to compete. The chairman and Mr Montgomery agreed with Mr Maude as to the ad visibility of throwing some of the scholarships open to the girls. The Inspector pointed out that to examine the girls with the boys would be inconvenient, as the subjects set for examination to the two would be different. Mr Maude poirted out that he meant to put aside one or two scholarships exclusively for the'girls, should the idea be deemed a feasible one. It was decided to refer the suggestion to the examiners for their opinion on the matter. TEACHERS' EXAMINATION. The Inspector intimated to the Board that the full report of the Board of Examiners on ' the teachers' examination would be brought up at the next meeting, EAST OXFORD. A letter was read from the local committee, enclosing plan of additions to school, and requesting sanction of the Board to the same,'as the school was very crowded. The BOard agreed to sanction the plans as forwarded, the committee to forward an estimate of the cost. i BUSINESS DONE BY CHAIRMAN. : Thebusiness done, by the chairman during the'week was approved by the Board. ' ! INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector's report was brought up, and consideration deferred until next meeting of the Board. ' The Board then adjourned.
