ELLESMERE.
A meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held in the office, Leeston, on Monday, Ist February. Present—C. J. Bridge, Esq, chairman, Messrs J. Rennie, T. Ackland, and R. Lockhead. A letter was read from Mr Loe, asking the Board to sanction a tramway being laid across the Timber Depot road, enclosing a plan of same. The Board agreed to sanction the tramway on condition that no injury was done to the road. Mr T. H. Dodd appeared before the Board, asking what steps had been taken relative to the proposed speoial rate for the purpose of clearing Taumutu Creek. After considerable discussion on the subject, it was proposed by Mr Rennie, seconded by Mr Ackland, and carried—" That the Board undertake to clear the creek along Pohan's road, provided that Mr Dodd raised the necessary funds to complete the work to the bridge on the main Taumutu road." The Board also undertook to pay half the cost of clearing the outlet. The overseer reported that the Road Board accounts had been audited and passed on January 21st by the provincial auditor, and that all the immigration cottages in the district were at present occupied. The overseer was instructed to insure the cottages as soon as possible. The tender of Mr James Caiston for the office of pouudkeeper was accepted. A circular was received from Mr T. H. Wiße, compiler of the " New Zealand Directory," asking the assistance of the Board in furnishing information with regard to the statistics of the district. The Board acquiesced in his request, and desired that several copies of same when completed should be furnished to them. The overseer was instructed to call for tenders for deepening second portion of main drain from the railway to the junction of branch drain. The overseer was authorised to clear the drain from Boggy Creek to main drain. Thejoverseer's report was read and considered. The pay-sheet, amounting to £lO9 7s Bdj was examined and passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. „ OXFORD. A meeting was held on Friday, January 29th. Present—All the members. An application was read from Mr D. McPhredan, asking to be allowed to cut timber off a portion of the Main Bush road, subject to the usual conditions. Mr Sedcole proposed, Mr Fisher seconded—" That permission be granted to Mr McPbredran to cut timber a distance of only five chains." Carried. An application from Mr Petrie was made, asking to be allowed to take some loads of earth off the top of the gravel pit on the Harewood Forest road. Permission granted. It was resolved that the surveyor write to the Secretary for Public Works, asking to be informed if the Government would give the Board whitethorn to plant round the portion of the recreation reserve set aside for the blue gum seed in place of gorse. Also, report upon bridge on the Main Bush road, and take steps to have certain gravel pit reserves laid off. Amounts £312 16s 9d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
