ROAD BOARDS.
ASHBURTON. A meeting of the above Board was held on Tuesday, February 2nd. Present—All mem- " bersexcept Mr R. Miller. The following surveyor's report was read—- " Since last meeting I have the honor to report as follows: Contracts—Old Wakanui road, and road off same, I have given a final certificate for this work. Graham's road drain, William Price. I have also passed this contract. Alford Forest road, R. D. Pullan. I have given a certificate for £147 18s 3d for works executed on this contract. Coldstream Swamp road, Blackler and Greenaway. I have given a certificate for £l5O. Timber—Julius Mendelson. Out of 22,821 feet of timber I have taken 19,109 feet on behalf of the Board. The Board are in great need of timber on account of Messrs Nees, Tisch and Co not carrying out this contract. The following is most urgently required:— 200 pieces, 18x 12 x 12; 100 pieces, 18 x 8 x 8; 100 pieces, 20 xl2x 6; 100 pieces, 10 xlO x 6; 1000 pieces, 16x9x3; 1600 pieces, 16 x9x 2; and 200 pieces, 15 xsx 5. Black birch is the most preferable timber for the purposes of the Board, but as it appears the most difficult to procure, I would recommend kauri being tried, as all heart timber can easily be obtained. Immigrants' cottages, J. Leggett and Co—l have given a certificate for £ll3 on account of wor* done. Wakanui road and Ashburton and Beach road—l have examined the portions of these roads proposed to be constructed. The length of the first-named road is about three miles and fifty-eight chains, and will be easily made, and not require any bridges or eulverts. The Ashburton and Beach road is asked to be made from the portion already completed to gravel reserve No 1417, a distance of about two miles and forty-one chains. A great portion of this length is tery wet during the winter, and will require several culverts, in addition to the seven recently put in. The part of the road in question is fenced on one side, and partially on both, which renders it all the more necessary that it should be made. It will be a much more expensive road to construct than the last named. Since the last meeting of the Board I have had a small bridge built over a gully by Andrew Leatham's, as the last (fresh had rendered it impassable. 1 have fixed the sites for the greater portion of the immigrants' cottages, and arranged for the construction of the bridges and oulverts agreed to be made on roads at sections 18894 and 17326, and sections 7200 and 8397. District map—To avoid any further delay in the preparation of a district map for lithographing, I have to advise the Board to accept the offer made by the Provincial Government. The labor gangs have been employed putting in a culvert on Elgin road, two culverts on the Coldstream Swamp road, one on Dawson's road, and repairing bridge at Mrß Greenstreets, and culverts at the Hinds, constructing a bridge by Andrew Leatham's, and partly building a bridge over a creek on public road at sections 17743 and 17744, partly fenoing-in reserve No 957 in the township, carting materials from the railway station, getting up earth closets, and repairing plant and tools." Blackler and Greenaway's letter was ordered to lie on the table. '• Mr W. Gilmour had an interview with the Board re contracts on Jackson's and Black's roads. Resolved—" That Mr Gilmour's offer of a compromise be accepted." Re approaches to bridge on Great South road, South of Ashburton. Resolved—" That the Board do the work at once at the contractor's cost, the same being highly dangerous." Besolved—"That the Government be requested to provide a map of the district to a forty scale, as offered by them." Me letter of Mr W. C. Walker, on the natter of proclaiming an agricultural district. It was resolved to further consider it at next meeting.- ". Re Manson's application for one-half cost of drain off Boundary road. Resolved that the same be paid. Besolved—" That plans be prepared for the following roads, by the meeting of the Bo*rd in March, viz.—-Continuation of Elgin road, Ashburton and Beach road, Rangitata road, by, Sir Cracroft Wilson's; a road at Winchmore; one on the north-west boundary of district, also Brace's road." Besolved—That a cutting be made on road called Brace's road by the overseer's gang at once. The clerk was directed to advertise to the effect that earth closets can be supplied to the inhabitants of the town at cost price. The clerk gave one month's notice of resignation, in consequence of the great decrease in his salary. The Board accepted the same, and expressed themselves as highly satisfied with manner in which he had carried out the duties of the office. Accounts amounting to £B3O Is fid were passed for payment.
