Volunteer Engineers—A parade or tniK corps will be held this evening at the company's dnll erounds. Templar Hall Company.—A tenderhas been accepted for the erection of a lodge room. It is also notified that a call of 10, per share is now du-', and should be paid im mediately. New Brighton.—"We learn that Mr George Oram has taken the New Brighton Hotel, lately occupied by Mr J. H. Hopkins. Mr Oram is well known in Christchurch. as a successful caterer for the public, having been for some years landlord of the Clarendon Hotel in this town. Circus—There was an oveiflowing house at the Circus list night, when the performance was for the benefit of Messrs Ki g and Blow. The great event of the evening was of course the awarding of the prize offered by the proprietors for the best original conundrum. A large batch vas sent in and read out. by Mr King and assistants. Ultimately the choice of the audience fell upon one sent in by Mr J. Parker, which was very good. To-night there will.be a change, and s atmday will be the last night. Oxford Kailway —On Thursday morning a truck loaded with ballast, escaped from the formation works near Oxford, and ran of its own accord down the line towards Rangiora, increasing its speed as it passed through the Cust, and at the Moeraki station nearly encountered the down passenger train. The driver and guard, fortunately seeing a collision imminent, ran the train into the siding just before the truck passed, but it nearly touched the last carriage. The guard threw a skeper on the line to stop it, but it jumped over it, and as the brake was thus shaken down, the waggon was being brought to a stand till near Fernside station, when it was followed by a man and stopped; Astronomical Society.—A meeting of the subscribers to this society was held at the Philosophical Institute, yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs 0. C. Bowen (in the chair). G. Gordon, W. T. W. Hamilton, Carruthers, Maskell (hon sec), B. W. Mountfort, and Rev O. Fraser. The treasurer reported that the funds in hand to the credit of the sociely was £226 9s 4d. After some conversation respecting the purchase of instrument? fo the use of the cociety, it was resolved—'"That tbe secretary be requested to confer with Major Palmer, K.E , as to the advisability of the purchase of a transit instrument and sidereal cloi;k, with a view of taking time here for regulating the time-ball apparatus pu-ch >sed by the Provincial Government, and that the coun il bdauthorised to incur any expenditure for that purpose not exceeding £200." The maeting then adjourned.
