POUT OF LYTTELTON.
ARRIVED. January 14—Linnet, ketch, 17 tons, Smith, from Pigeon Bay.
There was no sign of the s.s. Omeo when our express left. She left Dunedin 3.45 p.m. yesterday. It is expected she will not arrive until about 5 p.m. THE NORTH-EAST RANGE.
Last night the heavy range that was so severe during the day, with increasing wind, placed several ships in an awkward position The Grace Darling drove up the harbour about a mile; the Werope was also driven into shallow water —only about 19 feet—our local steamers not being strong enough to shift her down the harbour. The barques Elizabeth Graham and the Australian Sovereign also drove towards the reef, the latter being placed in the most hazardous position. At 10 a.m. Pilot Reed and his crew went on board, and the Gazelle was in attendance but her power was not sufficient to move her for some hours. The brigantine Magellan Cloud parted her chain, and will be towed to the buoy this afternoon. There has been no work done at the wharves to day, and it was with great difficulty the vessels were prevented from coming into collision with each other. These things shew the urgent ■eoeasity for a powerful steamer for this port, as if any of these vessels drifted on shore, all the harbour authorities could do, would be to look on and see them dashed to pieces, causing a loss to all concerned. The Otago Government subsidises the p.s. Geelong for towing purposes, and it is a wonder that rich Canterbury cannot temporarily procure a steamer for the same object. The Australian Sovereign has now been towed out of danger by the Gazelle, and the Halcyon will make aa attempt to move the llerope this afternoon. THE COSPATRICK.
