BOROUGH COUNCIL.

KAIAPOI.

Tuesday, Jakuary 12. The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present—the Mayor, Crs Beharrell, McDonald, Blackwell, Funston, Milson, and Porter. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Parnham. Letters were read from Secretary tor Public Works, acknowledging receipt of Council's resolution declining to accept responsibility of expending £SOO, as suggested by Government ; also that letter referring to floodgates in railway embankment had been referred to Provincial Engineer lor his report. No committee reports were handed in. Cr Porter moved, Cr Funston seconded—- “ That accounts, viz., Northern Store (sundries’) £8 18s Hd ; Birch and Co (timber) carting, £ 1 2s; fire brigade, £ll2s 8d ; foreman, £4 ; labor. £3 ; town clerk, £5 8s lid , total; £3l 9s 6d ; be passed for payment. Agreed to* The cash-book showed a credit balance oi £213 4s sd. „ , The receipts of the fortnight were Court fines, £1 ; and rates, £1 18s. Br Blackwell moved, Cr McDonald seconded—“ That the Press be appoint eo official paper for ensuing twelve months. Carried unanimously.

The Mayor drew attention to the nonpayment by the Insurance Association of the annual sum of £25 promised towards the maintenance of the fire engine and brigade r< quirementa, which was done in June last, although three letters bad been sent to the secretary of the association respecting it. After discussion, Cr Blackwell moved, Or Milsom seconded —“That the clerk write again, applying for the Insurance Association’s annual contribution towards the fire brigade, and the Council expresses • its surprise that the amount due in June last has not been paid.” Carried. Cr Blackwell pointed out necessity for repairs to bridge in Hilton street. Referred to works committee. Cr McDonald asked if the council had met in committee to discuss the protective works question, he having received no notice ? The Mayor said it rested with Cr Blackwell, as mover, for the appointment of the committee, and by standing rule therefore chairman of the same to call the meeting. Cr Wearing’s notice of motion to spend the funds at disposal of the Council in carrying on system of protective works lapsed in the absence of the mover. The Council then adjourned.
