MessrsM'Mcckan and Blackwood's steamer Otago, Captain John M'Lean. arrived at the Gladstone Pier at 7 a.m. yesterday. Since she was last here tha Otago dropped one month in her running, lor the purpose ox going into dock in Melbourne to be overhauled and cleaned, and also to modify her rig a little. Very decided improvements were effected about her. Her once taunt, masts have been reduced by six feet; a new propeller was shipped; her machinery and boilers underwent a rigid scrutiny, and her bottom was cleaned and recoated. Her saloon accommodation was also repainted and renovated generally, and her hull was painted outside, and thedecktming. either retrained or revarnished. That the Otago was benefited by the care lavished upon her was evidenced by her Increased speed when she got into a sea way again, .She travels mtMh faster than of yore. We observe that Mr Has ton, who so long and so ably filled the position of purser to the Otago, has resigned office, and has been succeeded by Mr De Leon, to whom we are indebted for the report and our Melbourne exchanges. The Otago ran an excursion.trip to Milford SmndTbls time; and Was largely patronised by passengers, of whom there were nearly 100 on board. She left Melbourne on the 23rd ult: had light westerly winds and calms and fine weather during the mn, and arrived at the Sound on 28th ult at 3 a.m. f the passage having been made In four days ten hours. She remained at the Sound that day and the greater part of the next, whilst the excursionists amused themselves beat log and fishing, and viewed the grand scenery of the place. It proved a moat enjoyable visit to all of them, only too short; a week would scarcely, have sufficed to havei inspected the chief points of interest of the marvellous Sound. At 4.30 p.m. on the 29th the steamer cleared out, aha after » pleasant run arrived at the BluflTat 1 p.m. on the 30th. Discharged a considerable cargo, - and' left’ again at «30 p.m. Experienced light K.E. winds, and arrived at Dunedin at 6.30 a.m. on the 31st. She experienced from Melbourne to the Bluff light westerly airs and calms; left again at 4 p.m. on January 4th, with light westerly freeze, and arrived as above. She sailed for WelUrigtbn and Melbourne shortly after 6 p.m. last night.
