HEATHCOTE VALLEY SCHOOL.

The annual treat and distribution of prizes took place on Monday last. The children assembled at 2.80, in the grounds adjoining the school, where they were received by the members of committee, teachers, and friends, and were entertained with games, races, &c, till 3.80, when a plentiful supply of buns and cherries were distributed, after which sports were resumed until 5.30, when tea was served on the green. The children having done justice to the good things provided, returned to their games, while the friends assisting sat down to a tea provided for them in the schoolroom. At 7 o’clock the children were marched into the schoolroom (at one end of which, we must add, was a Christmas tree laden with toys, &c). Mr Dunlop, chairman of the committee, took the chair and addressed the children, congratulating them on the condition of the school as highly creditable to both teachers and children. The prizes were then presented to the children by Mrs Newton, with words of affectionate advice and kindly encouragement. The following are the names of those to whom prizes were awarded : CLASS I. Ist prize, Mary Dixon; 2nd, Martha Weir. Bible Knowledge and Regular Attendance —Bessie Smith, CLASS 11, Ist prize, Annie Smith ; 2nd, Douglas Dale. Arithmetic —John McDowell. Reading—Rachel Anderson, Bible Knowledge—William Perkins, CLASS 111. Ist prize, William Ware ; 2nd, Palmer Ware ; 3rd, Thomas Weir ; 4th, Robert Bell; sth, Norman Dunlop, Writing—Allan Dale, Regular attendance —Christian Knudsen, CLASS IV. Arthur Smith and Robert Jewiss, equal, CLASS v. Ist prize, Reginald Dunlop ; 2nd, Robert Martin ; 3rd, Anne McDowell; 4th, Emma Jewiss. Regular attendance—George Ware. Needlework —Ist prize—Charlotte Smith ; 2nd, Clara Flavel. A silver thimble for the best girl, and a pocket knife for the best boy, given by Mrs Dunlop, were awarded by the children themselves, by ballot, respectively to Mary Dix on and William Perkins. After the distribution of prizes the articles on the Christmas tree were drawn for and distributed, causing great excitement and joy, as there were no blanks, each child thus receiving a toy of greater or less value.

In conclusion the chairman called upon the children to give three cheers for Mr Newton and Mi-s Stewart, the teachers of the school, and also for Mrs Newton, who had taken such great intore.-t in their welfare and happiness. Cheers were also given for the chairman and the members of (he committee. After singing a piece of music they returned to their homes, thoroughly pleased with the afternoon’s enjoyment,
