Every boy present who had not obtained an examination prize received a book, as a memento of the school they had attended, but which was now to be closed. The Incumbent (Rev B. A. Lingard) in giving the prizes, spoke a few kindly words to the boys, expressing his great regret that the school committee had been compelled to close the school as a Church school, and stated that they would still have an opportunity of meeting for school-work in in the same building for some time to come, as the East Christchurch school committee would re-open the school after the Christmas holidays, as a District school, under the Education Ordinance. Several books, slates, and other school materials that had been in use in the school during the year, were distributed among the boys by lot, who then made for their homes, evidently sorry that they were leaving St Luke’s Church school for the last time.
