MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, December 12. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, R.M.] BREACH OF PRISONS ACT. Trevor B. Barrett, who had but lately been released from prison, was charged with this offence. Mr Ferguson, warden at the Addington Gaol, deposed to seeing the prisoner scale the outer wall there, and throw a box of matches to some prisoners who were working under his charge. His Worship administered a severe caution to the accused, and inflicted a fine of £5, in default, fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor, VAGRANCY. Herman von Jctson, who had been arrested at Tai-Tapu on this charge, was brought up. The evidence of several witnesses proved that the prisoner had been for some time time past wandering about that district, refusing to work, obtaining food without paying for it, and frightening women and children. His Worship advised the accused not to appear before him again on this charge, and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. LYTTELTON. Friday,* December 18. [Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.] DRUNKENNESS. George Edwards, arrested by Constable McGorman, charged with the above offence, was fined 10s or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Peter Enland, arrested by Sergeant Maguire, was dismissed with a caution. LARCENY, Henry Barker, on remand on bail, answered to his name, and stated that his solicitor was unable to attend, being engaged in Christchurch. The Bench sentenced accused to one week’s imprisonment with hard labor in Lyttelton gaol,
